Last paragraph in chapter gets split
Aura HD with 3.1.1 firmware. I find that quite frequently (like two or three chapters out of every ten), the last line of the last paragraph in a chapter gets orphaned onto a new page all by itself, even though the previous page is only 1/3 or 1/2 full. The problem happens with multiple epubs - I've loaded several of them into Sigil and had a look at the paragraphs in question, and there is nothing there to be forcing the text onto a new page. I've also checked the stylesheet.css for the epubs, and there is nothing to do with windows and orphans in there, nor do I have any kobo_extra.css file on the reader.
The epubs are being loaded onto the reader using Calibre, Is this just a bug in the Kobo software that I'm seeing here? |

The same thing happened to me with Kobo Aura HD and same firmware; never noted with previous firmware.

That is a known bug in the firmware and has been around for a long time. It seems to affect some people more than others. For me, I see it no more the one in 20 chapters. Even though I don't see it that much, it is a bug that annoys me. Nt because it happens, but because I haven't been able to work out a pattern for when it will happen.

As far as I know, it is an epub only thing. Along with the long paragraph bug. Someone has suggested the latter will get fixed if Kobo upgrades to the new RMSDK needed for the new Adobe DRM. I suspect this bug will be fixed by that as well.

My sense has been that Kobo abandoned the idea of fixing or improving the epub experience a very long time ago. Initially, I thought it was in anticipation of a functional ePub3 experience. Maybe that is true. Maybe it is related to the RMSDK. I have given up on crystal ball gazing around this issue.I'm not very good at it

My experience is that its related to font size. Using a larger font I see far more split paragraphs than with a smaller one.

1. Hyphenation at line ends is now breaking words at the wrong place. For example, I'm staring at the word "everywhere" hyphenated as "everyw-here". 2. If the book is formatted to use em dashes between words without a space either side of the em dash, the reader is now sometimes inserting spaces each side of the em dash as part of justifying lines. That didn't happen when they were epubs. |

The long paragraph bug (and others like this one I reported in my old Sony PRS-650 and which is also present in my Kobo AuraHD) is present across every brand... But ACCESS isn't error free either. You've gotten a known issue about extra spacing around some punctuation marks and their partner words when justifying I posted in the bug thread. (Some discussion starts here about it). And there are other issues. I give you some examples:
Some of them possibly happen just because kepub specification is not known. So, although it really seems logical expecting it being a step forward from epubs, maybe some things aren't permitted anymore and they raise "bugs". About the hyphenation, and just to be sure. Hyphenation in ACCESS is disabled by default. You have enabled it through the CSS trick, haven't you? In any case, it really seems the trouble is not in the engine but in the hyphenation dictionary... (Yes dictionaries in Kobo are not really really good, because of that there are some hacks about substituting them in these forums). |
