Oddly, every book on a recent Kindle has a difference book key, unlike books on Kindle for iOS which all use the same book key, or did last time I looked.
What is the purpose of that? How is it more secure than a per-device key, which practically speaking it is?

Despite that fact you're right. It's the same with computer games. Wait a year and you'll get it cheaper. I don't have the time to read everything at once anyway.

I view the DRM "upgrade" as inconsequential because in 6-12 months it will be broken, while the changes Adobe decides to make in their rendering of ePub3, how they implement the changes and what parts of ePub3 they do implement will still affect our reading in 6 years.

No conspiracy theory, but they seem to have decided to make the DRM release first to alert users to what's coming, force them to do something to prepare for it, and possibly avoid being blamed by people who don't prepare.

To my way of thinking the books are the only thing that really matters.

Do you think it will take that long?

Happily, I have more than 12 months of reading stashed (plus, there's always the DRM-free shops and Amazon).

6 of one, half-dozen of the other. IMHO, epub3 support is going to be the shiny crowbar which Adobe will use on the public-facing application side to drive otherwise savvy e-book customers (perhaps kicking and screaming) into SW/HW updates which work only with the hardened DRM infrastructure.

Because the per-book key uses a larger range of characters in the key, it's much, much harder to brute-force the key. That's about the only advantage. Apart from the change itself.

But there's no purpose to DRM, so no purpose to changes, either.

but the existing work-arounds ( which I know we are not allowed to discuss in depth) don't brute-force the key anyway, they use a far smarter solution.

Oh yes. But they needed extra work by to restore the decryption function after the changes.

Brute-force solutions are unlikely to be useful with any recent DRM scheme, which will be using effective keys of a much greater length.

There is no guarantee of that. What if it took a year? Two years? Three? Forever?

I cant see it being long at all before its broken, look at Blueray, if I remember right some people were saying it would take people 10 yrs to break that.

Some people will want to break it just because its a challenge.

Some one has got to want to break it, to have the skills and time to break it, and to want to publish the hack without worrying about the legal consequences.

I just downloaded a book from Overdrive with ADE 1.7 a few minutes ago, so I don't think anything's happened to the server yet.

I installed Sony Reader since I still have an account and was able to open the book with that, a very strange situation. I was going to read the book on my HD+ but I just returned it and borrowed the Kindle version which loaded wireless to my K3 to read.
