This is how the trees in my backyard looked this morning before the sun came out. So pretty, but we dodged a bullet here with less ice than expected. People south of me a little bit weren't so lucky.

Just returned from working outside - there's good news & bad news.
It's 36 F and stuff is melting/falling from the trees, lines, etc. - I'd guesstimate we got .1" of freezing rain. I was able to clear the stairs and a section of driveway - just crack the crust and push. But - it started sleeting while I was outside - I started hearing stuff bouncing off my hood - it's now mixed with rain. If it stops before the temps dip below freezing all will be well. If it continues into the night .... it could be interesting. Heading towards my recliner to read. The cats have followed me around all morning ... they're not going to let me escape again! |

Snow? Ice? I had enough of them when living in Vermont. I finally decided to remove the source of yearly complaints. Enough is enough. I finally figured out that life is just too short to go through that again and again and again.

We got more snow then was predicted in the DC area. (shrugs) If they called for the storm to hit in the evening, then there is no reason to tell people to stay off the road during the day. When the storm starts early, it causes trouble.
The problem we have in my area is that one bad call led to Atlanta like traffic and issues about three years ago. Since then, any possibility of snow or ice leads to an early closure of everything. 95% of the time it is an over reaction and people like me get pissed off. Three years ago my Husband and I both saw the snow start early and left work because we knew the predicted storm was bad. Many people didn't. The Federal Government shut everything down at the same time and traffic jammed bad. Then the meat of the storm hit, hours earlier then it was suppose to. If more people had left when they saw the stuff coming down sooner then predicted there would not have been a problem. There is a desire to work and not use vacation days, I feel that pull, so people stay when they shouldn't. But the aftermath has been at least four days this year and several days last year where things were shut down when there was no need. As in the roads were totally clear, an inch of snow feel and it was 35 degrees out so nothing stuck. It is a tricky business. I fall on the we should all be adults and decide for ourselves when it is safe or not. I prefer the delays with liberal leave possibility so that people can make their own determination. No one is punished if they feel that it is not safe to drive and those who feel that it is safe can work. |

Today I watched someone in a company copying files from my external hard drive to their network.
- Doubleclick file. - It opens in a particular program. - Save the file to the network share. - Doubleclick the next file. - It opens in another program. - Save the file to the network share. - Doubleclick the third file. - Get an error because no program is available. "I can't copy this file to the network." There HAS to be a worse way. There has to be. And it'll be found... one day. Who said this, at one time or another? "If you make something more idiot proof, the universe just invents a better idiot." I've said it more than once, and I mean it: some people should not be allowed to use a computer. |

The real problem was that people had already abandoned their cars in lanes of travel by 1 pm even though the snow had only been falling for at most an hour. There wasn't even ice on the ground yet. Turning a roadway into a slalom course only compounded the traffic and increased the gridlock. |
