It's snowing now. At least I think it's snowing, snow usually falls down not sideways, right?

Forecast has increased to 10-15cm now and the wind is up now 51km/h gusting to 64km/h.

Snowing here, too. Just started about twenty minutes ago, and it's already getting pretty heavy.

No snow yet. Can't wait for little man to go to bed so I can have a beer. My supervisor decided he had to formally counsel me today. Essentially, he gave a vague task that he told me to start and stop and wait for x,y, and z,and complete in a format we never used. We missed a fake deadline, no one asked for the product. After pointing out the various things that I have done that are positive, acknowledge that he gave no clear guidance, didn't take time to show me how to write in the new format, and state that he needed to respond to requests for draft

Now, I have been goofing off the last few weeks and not produced much. We don't have a product due so I have not been focused. Fine. There is other stuff I can do and I will. But to go to my company supervisor without talking to me first and threaten a formal warning that could get me fired when the problem was created by him is BS.

After I got to speak he decided not to make anything formal and announce to everyone I was his deputy. Anyone else think he knew he was screwed if he took this forward?

Sooooo pissed. Just say "less time online" or "I noticed that the last few weeks your production has fallen" and we are good. But go to our boss over a situation you created? Just no

Office politics... I'm sorry you have to put up with it. It's really not fair at all. Personally, I never put up with it. Despite financial loss, I've left jobs that made me upset. Life is just too short to live it any way other than how we want. I'd rather complain about being broke than about being in a 40-hour a week hell.

so far today I have heard that 93 million (yes million) are without power in the southeast and up to a foot of snow and an inch of ice is expected in the Georgia/S.C. area

Finally got home - it took 5 1/2 hours to drive home [normal drive time = 20 minutes] - our snow started at noon - so all the schools closed, all the businesses/malls/etc. closed .... and thousands of frightened drivers hit the roads simultaneously - with snow/sleet/fog plus high winds. When it takes you 30 minutes or more to make a left turn onto a highway you begin to expect the worst. I honestly thought I was going to spend the next 2 days stranded on route 54 - along with thousands of other upset drivers - traffic was progressing at less than a crawl - at the stop lights we all jumped out and cracked the ice off of our windshield wipers - good Samaritans stopped to check abandoned cars to see if anyone needed rescuing ... my windshield cracked ... my rear window wiper broke off from the weight of the snow ... I was literally shaking with chest pain when I finally pulled into my neighborhood and slid up to my curb.
Early retirement looks real good tonight ... I'm too old for this level of stress ... after 2 Guinness I'm still tense ...

Yup. Couldn't agree more. I even had someone working for me that ran an eBay business from his desk. But I also made sure that he understood that was all fine when there wasn't a deadline or a crunch, but I didn't want to see him even THINK about it when there was. We got on just fine, and he never made me unhappy about it.

Rule #1: Start small, deal with issues in as quiet a way as possible so that they aren't issues. There's always plenty of time later to pull out the bazooka if you need it, but don't start by ringing the doorbell with it.

OK, pooh, I'm going to say this once, very quietly. (Remember the bazooka? Good. Keep that in the front of your mind. Now...)

Quit. Get a job that lets you telecommute at least 70%. You're in a business that makes that trivially easy. I can (and have) run the IT department for a software development company that's a 4 hour drive away from my office at home. The technology makes this easy-peasy. Heck, most of the time, no one can even tell whether I'm working from my home office, or in the company HQ.

Life is WAY too short, let's not go out of our way to make it shorter. Please.

Thanks Charlie - tonight's experience has really accelerated my thinking/planning for improving what's left of my life - since I'll be snowbound for the next 2-3 days, I'll be able to devote some considerable time to developing escape plans.

I'm glad to hear you made it. I thought about you tonight when the local news reporters were saying that many in North Carolina were stranded on the roads. Actually, what was said is that "people ignored warnings by police to stay off the roads" and were stranded as a result. The way they said it got under my skin. What of all those people who, in today's economy, don't dare miss a day of work without a very good excuse who were stranded because their bosses didn't let them off early so they could get home safely? I'm sure there were very few people on the roads this afternoon by choice.

Do you know what really fubared the traffic tonight? There was a basketball game scheduled for tonight - Duke playing at UNC - which the officials refused to cancel [it was going to be televised] - they were going to fill the arena with students from the dorms - let them in for free to be the TV audience ... they only cancelled it AFTER I got home - b/c the Duke bus couldn't get to UNC in time for the game! So thousands of fans were pouring into UNC - on route 54 - and leaving the same day on route 54 - all because of a frigging basketball game!

Sure! Blame the drivers trying to come home from work!

Oh, Pooh, I'm so sorry. Same thing that happened here two weeks ago. And same "blame the drivers" when all anybody was trying to do was go home from work. Yeah, well not this time. Government reacted early and decisively. Ghost town on the roads here.

Go to bed. Rest well and enjoy a snow day tomorrow with the kitties!

so, in all seriousness, I'm going to ask you why you decided to go into work? I have stayed home many snow days simply because I knew it was going to be a clusterf*ck on the roads. I grew up driving in Colorado, and then as a soldier in Germany, AND I'm a skier. it's not me I'm worried about, it's all the other non-driving mo-fos out there. so, seriously I don't understand why people that are not basically one warning away from being fired (and even then I wonder) GET ON THE ROAD WHEN THEY ARE ADVISED NOT TO!!!!!

someone is playing fast and loose with your folks information down there. this from NPR; "The situation led officials to postpone tonight's planned basketball game between archrivals North Carolina and Duke a game that earlier today the state's governor had urged people no to try to attend"

the last time I gutted it out when advised that traffic was going to be bad due to weather was in Germany. it took me five and a half hours to get to work (normal 45 minutes). my husband was in the field for the next several weeks, my kids were home with the nanny. all of the local bases were closed in the next fifteen minutes after I got to work. I knew it was going to be bad for the foreseeable future so I stopped by the Stars and Stripes (book store) overspent my mad money and headed back home, that only took two hours (and I stayed off the autobahn). my personal rule ever since then is if the school buses aren't moving, I'm not moving. more often than not I go in a few hours later but I do NOT screw around on the roads when warned not to
