I imagine there are always rumors of a new ereader from (company name). A lot of the time it's probably just that though they do continue to develop new ones I guess too.

Shouldn't we be closing in on some announcement by now? This seems like such a major upgrade that Amazon would like to milk it a bit. Or do they think there is no longer any competition for e-readers?

Would it hurt the sales of the current model if they made the announcement two or three months in advance? I don't know how Amazon usually handles their Kindle announcements (never owned one).

Oh, undoubtedly. And the fact that eInk have a 300+dpi screen in their product catalogue is a reasonable indication that higher resolution devices will be released. What we don't know is "by whom" and "when". That's where the speculation lies.

The "whom" will depend on their ability to deliver millions of units at a reasonable price.
Just because they can deliver small lots of a component to some second or third tier vendor doesn't mean their process has a good enough yield to meet Kindle volumes. Their facility might only be good for 5-10,000 screens a month, which might suffice for a vendor like Pocketbook or Onyx, or maybe Kobo, but would be totally inadequate (and problematic) for Amazon.

Hopefully they will end rumor by saying soon, or not until end of year.

I haven't owned a Kindle might never buy one as they don't sell one here but to me Amazon purchase of Liquavista last year was the more interesting thing.
Now Amazon coming out with good color eink type reader will be something to look forward to as its a given that Amazon will give special attention to readability contrast etc.

Not to disrespect you, Dave, but that blog post is hogwash. Just a round up of speculation and rumors. It's kind of idiotic that they published that on a "reviews" site, though as I am unfamiliar with the site, maybe that's what they do all the time.

According to the electronics best seller list, the Paperwhite is #2, so I don't think these rumors are making a bit of difference to the sales of the device.
