I have tried cursing squirels in several languages (English, Welsh and Latin, so far). They are entirely unresponsive. They sit on the bird-table and just look at me, and only move on when I'm about a metre away from them. Now that the weather is colder, they are digging up the pots of flowers on my patio, which is annoying. One of these days, I will turn the hosepipe on them.
On the other hand, the foxes always vanish as soon as they see me.

If you had to put up with Dr Who, Torchwood and the other spin-offs blocking the traffic etc then you might not feel so enthusiastic about living on a space-time rift. Personally, I think that's where the squirrels emerged from.

They are gathering in greater and greater numbers. They already outnumber us in this area. I saw a bunch of them registering to vote today. They were all wearing "Green Party" buttons. I fear that they will be the swing vote in the election. The news media is debating if Virginia is a Red or Blue state. I fear that it will be a Green state.

OK, People, Listen Up!

This is a true story about how tough these pandimensional squirrels really are:

We had an enormous fire ant hill beside our sidewalk. Nothing would kill it. They were excavating into the concrete. (If you don't believe me, ask any southerner if fire ants can eat into your sidewalk.) This pile was about a half foot high, a very big mound.

The mound was heavily sprinkled with poison pellets. Apparently the ants find them tasty. Well, yesterday morning, we came out to find a squirrel digging furiously in the ant pile. It seemed to be trying to bury a pecan in the pile, and it was covered in ants. While we watched, it ran to the grass and rolled around to get those stinging little b@stards off. Then it went back to it's job and started digging again, through stinging ants and poison pellets.

Nothing, not even ramming a shovel into the pile, drenching it with gasoline, and burning it has been able to kill that pile all summer. Yesterday evening, THE PILE WAS DESTROYED AND THERE WERE NO LIVING ANTS LEFT!

ONE DETERMINED SQUIRREL DID WHAT A FIERY CHEMICAL CONFLAGRATION COULD NOT DO!!!!!

Be afraid. Be very afraid.

Right. I'll be back in a bit. I am just going to completely raze my garden so there are NO hiding places near my house for them.

(Actually, that might be the quickest way to get it back into shape. Shame next door has put a new wooden fence in...)

Maybe we should be CHERISHING these squirrels. I mean, if they can help us with the fire ants ..... maybe they are on our side???

The only way I'm cherishing anything that can destroy a fire-ant mound as a mere side-effect of burying a nut is from a great distance.
