Choisya,
One last thing; before you give up on the reader entirely:
1. I received email this morning from Ectaco where I was told they are working on additional format support (unfortunately they did not specify which ones).
2. You can't use them for new books, but manybooks.net and feedbooks both allow you to download preformated PDFs; Basically you tell it your screen size, the size font you want and it will spit out a PDF designed for the Jetbook. Its easy and there are tens of thousands of titles to read.

Mobipocket? Nuts; I was hoping if they supported any DRM'd format it would be eReader .

Oh well. I still won't buy any Mobi based DRM'd books.

Many new books available on Mobipocket format on fictionwise.com and mobipocket.com websites and many publishers will produce books in EPUB fromat in the future so it looks like both formats will be most popular in US and Europe the same as MP3 format for musik.
Why you like eReader format more?

Its more my extreme dislike of the DRM thats built into mobi. Epub is an open standard (Though Adobe has built DRM into it), so I have less problems with that.

In any case, Mobi DRM ties your books to a particular device. So I have to register every device I want to read on. I object to that on several levels.

1. It limits my fair use of a work that I have paid for.
2. It means they can effectively track what devices I use for reading (and who knows what else).
3. If the DRM servers for Mobi ever get shutdown by Amazon (who decide that mobi enabled devices are too much competition for the Kindle... even though they own the Mobi format as well), it means that any books I have bought that have DRM cannot be transfered to new devices.

Ereader on the flip side uses a much friendlier DRM scheme. While it still limits my fair use somewhat, it is not nearly as draconian... I can read it on any device that has ereader software (unfortunately none of them is a dedicated reader). Its not tied to a DRM server so as long as I have access to the software and my decryption key I can freely switch devices.

Ultimately though, if DRM is abandoned, I have no particular interest in what ebook format triumphs.

I don't think that Mobipocket format will be less popular in near future. Too many people have blackberry and other pocket devices and like reading books on it. I think that most importnat criteria - the number of books available in Mobipocket format on the market now.

That's why I personally decided to "standardise" on MobiPocket some time ago. I don't know what I'll be reading eBooks on in 5 years time, but whatever it is I'm entirely confident that it will support MobiPocket. Mobi have far and away the best track record in the eBook business for supporting a wide range of reading devices - mobile phones, PDAs, dedicated readers, etc. I can read the same books on my HTC Touch phone, my iPaq PDA, and my CyBook Gen3; there's no other dedicated reading format that I could currently do the same with.

But the ePub the publishers will create will be DRM protected with Adobe's DRM and since we know that Mobipocket will not allow a second DRM format to be used with Mobipocket's DRM, you won't be able to read any of these new DRM laden ePub.

ePub is an open standard and can be wrapped with any DRM. If ePub is the way then we could see a mobiDRM protected ePub files.

On October 16, 2008 at the Frankfurt Book Fair, over 200 attendees joined IDPF, OverDrive, Inc., Random House UK, and Sony Reader to discuss the International Adoption of the EPUB eBook Standard. This session updated attendees on status of EPUB adoption and discussed the effects of EPUB on Publishers, Channels and Devices, including the Sony Reader.

It means that Sony will support ePub DRM protected files and it can be
mobiDRM, right?

Sony already do support DRM-protected ePub files - they are called "Adobe Digital Editions" and are protected with Adobe's DRM mechanism.

Adobe's DRM mechanism is currently the only one in use for ePub files, but what Bob was saying is that the ePub standard permits anyone to add their own DRM "wrapper" to it, so we could see additional DRM mechanisms being used for ePub files in the future.

That is why I believe Adobe is pushing hard to get their standard on portable devices. While ADE is on a Sony device it was Adobe themselves that added it, not Sony. I would expect further penetration in the eBook devices market by Adobe.

Overdrive, of course, already uses the Adobe DRM in their lending library software for ePUB and PDF.
