32bit doesn't have the problem, 64 bit does

@PeterNL - try removing the 32bit version from the path and running the 64bit version

it may be that path thing, but I definitely had both versions in stalled , when I was migrating to 64 bit + nervous, and there ware no issues with covers. I am pretty sure Kovis has said that both version should happily co-exist on same PC

- but I don't know if both versions were in the path - never looked.

It maybe better if PeterNL eliminated the PATH issue by saving the current value of PATH and then clearing it entirely and doing a test. If its still not working put the PATH back as it was - otherwise move the calibre entries to the front of the PATH. In my opinion the PATH is probably a red herring, but its worth a try, given its little effort to do so.

And yes, K has said its OK, its written on the 64bit downloads page.

This is a good idea, but if it is a path issue it most likely has to do with other programs in the path. It would have been nice if he had shared his entire path as initially asked instead of a truncated version.

@PeterNL - Have you tried creating a fresh configuration - quit calibre, rename existing configuration folder, start calibre 64bit, if it works try copy the renamed one on somewhere like c:\calibre_config and set the CALIBRE_CONFIG_DIRECTORY to refer to it ===>>> http://manual.calibre-ebook.com/customize.html

shot in the dark, if the books are epub or azw3 try running 64bit Polish book, with Update the cover checked, on the following
  • one of the books that does show a cover in 64bit viewer
  • one of the books that does not show a cover in 64bit viewer

Now have a look at both books in both the 32bit and 64bit viewers

share the results - not sure what I expect or what different possibilities might mean

I guess that rules out the path, very strange.

Nothing useful, not that I expected it. Windows is notoriously hard to get any useful debugging information from. Just use the 32 bit version, it is functionally identical, unless you need to convert some very large books.

You can also run

calibre-debug --test-build

That runs various tests on the compiled libraries that calibre uses.

Result from "calibre-debug --test-build" (64-bit, v 1.23)
after lots of 'loaded' s and 'OK' s, it ends with:

Python function terminated unexpectedly
Qt doesn't seem to be able to load its image plugins <Error Code:1>
Traceback <most recent call last>:
File "site.py", line 132, in main
File "site.py", line 109, in run_entry_point
File "site-packages\calibre\debug.py", line 261, in main
File "site-packages\calibre\test_build.py", line 146, in test
File "site-packages\calibre\test_build.py", line 79, in test_qt
RuntimeError: Qt doesn't seem to be able to load its image plugins

The 32-bit version doesn't give this Error Code and message.

Yeah that confirms the problem is something is preventing loading of the image libraries. Unfortunately, I know no way of determining what that might be on windows.
