And anybody who looks closely at the practices of the BPHs will quickly notice they have always been about concerted action; when they set author contract terms, they set them in lockstep. They are "industry standard" terms. If non-compete clauses appear at one publisher, they appear in all of them. If ebook terms change overnight to 25% of net, with net defined as whatever the publisher decides it is, the terms change everywhere. So the idea of the piracy-obsessed publishers telling their close personal friend Adobe (which derives a good deal of the power and money from the business, patronage, and sanction of those same publishers) to tighten up DRM at any cost does not sound particularly far-fetched, but more like business as usual. In fact, that july deadline? Not one of the BPHs complained, did they? Makes it sound like they knew it was coming. And Adobe's "retreat"? Who gets to decide when and where to switch DRM? The publishers! Wanna bet they all force the switch simultaneously? No need to be a wild conspiracy theorist when it comes to the publishing business; it is a matter of public record that they do it all the time. |

Isn't this merely a not unexpected shake-out in the ebook business? Sony and B&N had to get out and Sony moved first. When Content Server 5 goes live everyone with an old device who no longer buys ebooks won't notice anything and can still read their books. The defunct Sony and nook eReaders will sort of stop working as products of business that left the market to be transitioned to Kobo.
eReaders with lighted screens do not work well for people who like to read for several hours at a time, or like to read before going to sleep at night, or are simply tired of staring into a lighted screen all day. In any case, when the dust settles we will be left with just two players in the dedicated eReader market: Kindle. If this is a shakeout then we should expect Amazon to announce a sparkling new Kindle, perhaps with a larger screen. Kobo. Becomes the goto source for people using all the many ePub bookstores or who already have a big ePub library. Personally, I've started saving up in case I'm right about a new Amazon eReader (I'm such a sucker for new gadgets). Last edited by 6charlong; 02-07-2014 at 01:57 PM. |

There are many more players than Amazon and Kobo. Those are the only two with an e-reader *AND* a store, however. (Cybook has a small store as well, but not nearly as large as Kobo's, let alone Amazon's.)

Far too many companies have left customers of DRMed media in the lurch for us to be confident that Adobe and friends won't do the same. Hell, Adobe did it themselves with the switch from CS3 to CS4 a few years ago! |

Do the words "ebook price collusion lawsuit" mean anything to you? 'Cause it's been pretty big news in the industry for a few years now.

Depending on how you define "lighted screen," I either agree or disagree with you. I don't like reading books on a backlit screen like my iPad mini, but I frequently read them on my Kobo Glo's frontlit screen just before bedtime.

I don't know which country Akshayy is in, and he doesn't show that he owns an ereader, but he/she has stated that he works for Adobe and knows about ADE3. For someone to work doing whatever he does for Adobe, in whatever country he does that in, doesn't mean that he knows the ereader industry or ereaders in particular.
Akshayy has previously mentioned in a post that he isn't an expert on DRM, aNd surely he needn't be to do whatever he does. Whilst I think Akshayy is being a bit cheeky in some of his answers it must be remembered that English is not his first language and that he's taking a lot of flak for the decisions of Adobe. Akshayy please do not be offended by the flak you're receiving - people will pull you up for clarification, to express contrary views to yourself and to let you know if they think you're wrong. Posters who are a bit heavy with you and your views please just ignore. From my perspective I want to hear your viewpoint and any information relative to ADE3. |

Is Akshayy here as a spokesperson for Abobe or just as someone who happens to work for them.
To me it seams like the former. |

These are my personal opinions! What I know is software engineering and the things that go into making drm, since I studied computer science and that's it. now learning about the ebook world.
I don't own a dedicated eReader, nobody sells them in my country.. nobody buys too.. and personally I don't read books(except science textbooks). May be I will read few classic free ebups if I get time! I read blogs and forums. Participate in many online forums that interest me,that's why I signed up here as well to join the discussion.
