Yes, true but those books are available elsewhere. I listed the ebook megastores for one-stop shopping.

It was the opposite for me - at least in the beginning. I bought very little from Sony. When Agency price-fixing was announced, my local Target also happened to put Sony Giftcards on sale (I think it was $25 cards for $15). I bought an embarrassing amount of cards! So I was able to continue to buy books "at a discount" because I got my discount on the gift cards. Once I used them all up, though, that was probably the last time I bought a book at Sony.

If I had cheap giftcards I probably would have used them too. I'll have to keep that in mind for other things. Does Amazon or Kobo ever have giftcards on sale?

Some people don't have a desktop/laptop or just don't want to bother, especially with library books.

I sideload my library books as I am used to that, and delete them when I am done reading, but I probably should just download them to the reader as I would not have to remember to delete.

Yes, there is indeed a thread about this.

Short form: As near as I can tell, the no-download-button books are in EPUB 3.0 format, there's no reason Kobo couldn't give a download button for them, but at present the only way to get at them is with a Kobo app or device.

Small point: the Kobo light (Aura, Aura HD, Glo) is easily turned on and off. It's a hardware button. As for screen size, all the readers I've owned have had a 6" screen, which is comparable to the average mass-market paperback. My old Palm T2, now that was a postage-stamp screen...

The reason I didn't mention Tor is that, AFAIK, they don't sell directly to customers - and the subject was specifically stores.

I have downloaded all my Sony ebooks to the Sony desktop and the 505. There doesn't seem to be any way to transfer them to a thumb drive. I can download them to the tablet and transfer that way.

If you download with Adobe Digital Editions, you can copy the ebooks straight from ADE's download folder to any other folder. Doing so neither breaks, removes, nor adds DRM, but I would assume that DRM'd books would not be readable on another device.* However, as a pure plan to back up books for use on the same computer, that should work just fine. I do so myself.

* I have removed and reinstalled ADE on the same computer, as well as de/re-authorizing the same ID on that machine, and the protected books still worked just fine - but I haven't tried using those protected books on a different computer registered to the same ID, so I prefer to err on the side of paranoia.

I haven't really paid attention to the eReader market since I got my950, since I haven't really needed to. It is my primary eReader, by far, and since none of the books I read on it comes from the Sony store, I'm not worried. My 950 will be my loyal friend until it dies peacefully in its sleep after living a long and happy life.

The way I see it, this gives me an excuse to put the Kobo app back on my phone. I abandoned it a couple of years ago for sucking, but now I have a reason to give it a second chance.

Make sure you download version 2.01 and not 3.0. There is going to be a new drm soon that older ereaders can't use. 2.01 is on the same download page as 3.0.
