This is fracked. Adobe should be dismanteled because of pushiness or working against their own customers or something. I find it unacceptable that Adobe might enforce the new DRM, thereby disabling ADE 2.0 and any current reader along with it. You CAN'T demand from customers that they replace perfectly good readers that are just a year old, or stop buying books to wait a few months on firmware updates.
If this stuff is confusing to us, on people who are in the know down to the details, imagine how utterly lost a normal consumer will be. |

This is really what I'm concerned about with too. B&N doesn't use Adobe DRM really, Kobo also has alternatives and Sony is going out of business. The only place this would really hurt me is my ability to read library ebooks, which is incredibly irritating.

content server 5(publisher) has ability to Enforce new drm, not adobe's license signing service.
now just find out if your favorite bookstore wants to use server v5 enforce mode..that is render your old devices unusable that cant be updated or the devices the manufacturers refuse to update but enforce. do you think a device guy will enforce new drm and not update devices ? such terrible device guy then. So what's this talk about enforcement of the new DRM starting in July?
As a customer, I shouldn't have to worry about this. Many people even can't, as they don't know about DRM nor understand it. |

Now THAT's funny! 'Cause I'm fairly certain that 50% of those you listed DO want to rob me. They've at least attempted to do so in the past. So no reason to believe they won't hesitate to try and do so again.

ok that's funny too, am very curious then, will be interesting to see who does what! you can be certain at least somebody in that list certainly dislikes to disappoint customers.

Nope just a fair amount of experience with these types of changes screwing people over.
Jeff Bezos is having a grand old time these days. Sony is giving up on the US Market, BN is floundering, Kobo has barely made an impact on the US and in a matter of months a new DRM is going to screw things up badly enough to drive people who have strongly resisted Amazon to Amazon. |

It's possible that the devices attached to stores will get an update before they switch. So Kobo and, err, Kobo (Is anyone else left who uses Adept DRM and have a store and their own device?) Waterstones sells Adept epubs and Kindle eReaders so they already don't care that people who buy books from them will work on the device they buy from them. Sony is giving up selling eBooks (In the US & Canada at least). Everyone else selling ePubs leaves it up to you as to which device to buy, so if the Publishers insist on new DRM or you can't sell our books they will switch. For devices I very much doubt the Jetbook Lite will see an update (Last firmware update in 2010 and no longer sold), Coolreader went bump so no one will update theirs, Hanlin V5's last saw an update back in 2009, I don't remember the Sony 300/505/350/650 ever having an update. This is just from devices I own that still work perfectly well. I would assume that RMSDK10 will require more processing power that the current version so old devices may not even be able to run it anyway. |

And yes, we have seen it too many times a bookstore going out of business and people loosing their books. Fictionwise books were supposed to transfer to B&N, but a lot didn't and now we have Sony bookstore and devices(in US) going away so there will be books that can't transfer to Kobo. This also means that Sony devices will not be updated. Last edited by Purple Lady; 02-07-2014 at 11:41 AM. |

But surely the Bestest of Intentions to pretend that the customer has nothing to worry about counts for something, right?
