No actually, rmsdk10 has been released! its just C++/ C source code and libraries given away.
people are free to compile it for their platforms... and building it for arm based linux is too easy.. far easier than building the same for android or ios.. besides most android devices are arm based!

So what will happen if I have ADE 2.x and the bookseller has upgraded to CS5? Since Adobe seems to be backing off some now, I am not sure. Originally it seemed as though I would get the new drm - is that still the case now?

That isn't what they say in the Datalogics presentation. RMSDK10 will be provided only as a binary library; they specifically mention that you have to remember to link against it.

They also stated that the Linux ARM version is not yet available, although an Android version is. So a few recent eInk readers, including those from Sony, could theoretically have firmware upgrades in the pipeline.

In practice of course, they almost certainly won't!

In practice we don't know.

This year's devices will most likely have support for the new DRM, so maybe next year someone will decide to start using/enforcing it; at which point the problems start all over again (last year's gen not supporting things).

Maybe some reader brands will decide to update their current gen right away, as doing so (along with the new devices) may be simpler than having to revisit the issue next year or the year after... and if one company starts doing that, others may follow as none wants to risk being the one left out...

It's not cancelled until they all agree to stop using DRM altogether...

Since, as others have said, the DRM bit of the SDK is only being released as a binary library, not as source, I think that, despite having inside knowledge, you might not have got this right.

Are you certain that am ARM-binary DRM library for Linux has been released? Can you point us to a place where it can be downloaded?

According to the original presentation, "Old DRM" fulfillment (i.e., serving up to RMSDK9 client systems, including ADE2.x) is available from CS5 servers as an option, with Adobe CS5 customers (publishers/sellers) able to set an optional flag on their CS5 server installation to do so ... until July 2013, at which point the new "Hardened DRM" would be the CS5 servers' only option, as Adobe planned (again, according to the presentation) to shut down recognition of the CS5 "flag" at that time.

The post purportedly from someone at Adobe, posted at goodereader in response to the speculation about an "always on client" approach to DRM, is now walking back that July date to a new one: TBD (to be determined).

Remember, however, that some things apparently still stand from the presentation. Note, for example, that if your purchase is fulfilled on a client using RMSDK10 (including ADE3.0, or a shiny new e-toy), that you have 'poisoned' it yourself as to backwards compatibility. It will not sideload to RMSDK9 clients after that even though it is not the new "Hardened DRM".

(Again, that's according to the presentation, and it has not been contradicted yet. In practice, I believe people are still able to use the "tools" on books downloaded with ADE3.0, so perhaps this part of the presentation was talking only about CS5 sites and not CS4 sites?? Don't know.)

What matters most is where you open the book for the first time after buying the book.

First time open in old device with old firmware or ade 2.0, old drm epub.
First time open in new device with new firmware or ade 3.0, new drm epub.

The reason for this is the license key is stored in bookstore database. It will store either new drm key or old drm key.

Am I clear ?
Clear, but coming late to the thread, this would mean I would NEVER buy anything that required ADE 3 (and won't upgrade). Opening the book in ADE first, which is what I do now, would render the book useless on any EPUB reader I have. Since they don't have wireless, that procedure is absolutely required in order to get the book onto the reader in the first place.

Until Adobe forces upgrades, which I'm sure they will, no one would willingly use this (unless the only ereader that they have is already 3.0 aware). The instant that upgrading becomes required, that'll be the end of any EPUB's I buy.

With the Reader store shutting down, perhaps the question is moot for Sony? Who knows how much this new DRM scheme and what it meant for the installed ereader base played into their decision to shut down the store.

But I think a lot of people will just upgrade to ADE3.0 without knowing the consequences. And if they have an older ereader they will be in for a shocking surprise when they buy a book from a seller with an updated ACS.

But as far as we know, Sony is only shutting down the store in North America, so they still have the new DRM scheme to deal with in other countries.

You're right EowynCarter. I tried several things (ADE installation through winetricks, ADE installation by myself) and I think I mixed up the results. Indeed, now I don't believe that I got ADE 2.x working at all.

This is why I sent my mother's husband an email to make sure he doesn't upgrade. She has a Nook and reads a lot of library books. I wonder if libraries will be forced to update to cs5 and use the new drm. A lot of publishers don't like libraries.
