Calibre & the New Kindle Paperwhite

Hi, I have just upgraded to the new paperwhite from the previous generation paperwhite and an having problems with loading my Amazon content to the paperwhite via calibre.
Once the books are added some will not open saying they are registered to a different user and telling me to delete then re-download from amazon. I would prefer to download the books to computer then use calibre to organise my library before adding them to my kindle is this possible? Or can I download from the cloud then add them to calibre and organise them that way?

Any help would be appreciated.

Thanks

The books probably have Digital Rights Management on them. I suggest you google "apprentice alf".

MobileRead's policy is not to give detailed information about DRM removal, but it is acceptable to tell you that much.

When you become one of alf's apprentices, the (ebook) world will become so much simpler!

you need to register the new device to the same amazon account that you used for old device / old book purchases.

once a device is linked to an account it should be able to access all books bought using that account, however they are loaded i.e. it should not matter if calibre was used for interim storage. a purchased book is linked to a specific amazon account. that link should stay within the book file if added to vanilla calibre without any de-drm plug-ins. Calibre just files a copy of the .mobi or azw file without altering it.

so anything that worked on your old paper white should also work on your new paperwhite

it used to be the case that a new Kindle would arrive unregistered & you had to explicitly register it. dunno if that is how it still works. check your registrations

it cannot be that simple or this board would be flooded with "calibre is broken" complaints.

a simple test as to whether the books are actually "protected" is to try to open one with calibre. you'll get an error message if its protected.

another test is to email one of them to your current kindle account & see if it appears on the new PW

Are we talking here about books that you personally purchased. if so you should anyway be able to re-download them direct from amazon.

if the books are actually "registered to another user" then you will need to find out who that is. Alf's tools will not work unless you can get the books to be owned by yourself on your PC before starting e.g. within a registered Kindle for PC

But if "registered to another" then they could not have worked on your old device, unless that was registered o the same person. Are you sure you've not had more than 1 amazon account in the past, because that could explain things.

have you tried adding the problem books to an install of Kindle for PC , with that program registered to yourself ?

depending how the answers to the above play out - you may want to migrate this to the Kindle forum. it is unlikely to e a calibre issue per se.

PS log in to amazon - navigate to "manage my kindle" - it will display a complete list of all the books you have bought , including free ones. Match that to what you have in calibre.....

alo, read this + browse similar posts on Amazon forum. it COULD be that sideloading of procected books is NOT allowed on the newest Kindles in which case you will just have to do it their way or via Alf.s work-arounds.

Thanks, appretice alf worked for some of them but not all.
My books download straight to kindle via the cloud and work, I can open and read them. However I want to add them to my kindle using calibre to organise the books instead of downloading from the cloud. I like them i order and with all the metadata which I don't have if I download from the cloud.

it seems like amazon have blocked side loading / email loading of registered books. I was not aware of that.
A phone call to Kindle tech support should confirm or deny. Maybe the kindle has to have confirmation direct from the amazon server, simultaneous with the book, before it allows use ?

So you'll have to jailbreak them in order to sideload them via calibre, or via windows drag n drop , or whatever, You have already partly succeeded with that.. I think that's we can say here.

PS I assume you know that Amazon have blocked 3rd party programs like calibre from handling collections on the PW. the block is implemented in Amazon's firmware, you have to jailbreak it to work-around that.
it's well documented in other threads.

For all Kindles released after the Keyboard.

See this thread: K5 Collections Manager for the kindlet (jailbreak required) that will connect with a modified Collections Manager plugin to allow you to manage collections via calibre.

Unhappy

Hi, thanks for that. My kindle paperwhite is less than a week old. I'm not sure I want to lose the warranty on it even if I knew what to do to jailbreak it, I am not very technically minded, I still struggle to get plugins to work on calibre.
Not even sure I like the new paperwhite, it doesn't let me do things the same as the old one and I'm seriously thinking of sending it back and buying a different one that will do what I want it to do.

I agree, which is why I still have my old Kindle Touch.

If you think you can get it to work, go for it! It is well known (well, on MobileRead at least) that Amazon doesn't check the software for jailbreaking. They don't really care, and it's not worth the time for them. So don't worry about the warranty -- a number of MobileRead members have sent their jailbroken Kindles in on warranty, and Amazon never said a word; I can't think of a single story reported here where they rejected a jailbroken Kindle's warranty.
