USA 505 vs. UK 505

I have an unhappy customer who lives in the UK. He bought a USA version of the PRS-505 instead of the UK version. He says the item is useless in the UK. Is he right?

No, absolutely not right. He won't have a UK warranty, but the Reader itself will work just fine. I would guess that he's probably referring to the fact that he can't buy eBooks from Sony'e eBook store in the US, but that's equally true for people who buy a Reader in the UK. Tell him to come here to get advice on where to buy books.

The only difference he will see is the date display from all the reports we have had here.

His problem might be he needs to upgrade the firmware to allow adobe and epub DRM books on the device. I think if he got it in the UK it would already have the update but with one from the US he probably needs to install the software and have it check for updates to do the firmware update on the device, then it should be ok.

I would imagine that's what he is concerned about and doesn't understand.

That's really a loaded question. But, see the Wiki topic https://wiki.mobileread.com/wiki/E-book_stores

You should direct him here... we will answer all his questions and more.

Once the update for the firmware is done, he can shop for books at waterstone's. They have epub editions for the Sony Reader. Also places like Booksonboard.com for adobe PDf. Some publishers like penguin UK are launching epub editions on there websites. Randomhouse UK also I believe.

Here is the FINAL email from my customer in the UK after I sent him the link to this thread:

"and the link that you sent would not let me register to explain my point of view, as i would have liked to have quoted, and cut and pasted the sony technical department reply to the the "experts" across the pond, who appear to be far more superior than three sony helpline experts, but hey what do we know!!"

......if he was unable to figure out how to register on this site to post to this thread......and unable to see that some of the members at mobileread are from all parts of the world(not just the USA).........you can only lead a horse to water.

I'm sorry to hear about this, I actually bought my PRS-505 from ShopInTheUSA when I was living in Holland and then moved to the UK. It was a great deal, and having upgraded the firmware (which may not even be necessary as the newer models already come with it pre-loaded) it works fine with both the US Connect Store, Waterstones online store and just about any other source of ebooks.

On another note, ShopInTheUSA, will you be selling the PRS-700 via your ebay store?
