I think it will just cause more people to go looking for de-DRM tools. The exact thing they're trying to prevent.

And what will this "hardened" DRM achieve in return? Even the big publishers now know that going DRM-free did not increase piracy for Tor. At some point they'll eventually realize that Adobe DRM on commercial ebooks does nothing for them and actually helps Amazon and Apple. And indie publishers. I don't expect them to wise up too soon but eventually... (Maybe 2020. ![]() |

Am I understanding this correctly?
* According to post #237, B&N uses ACS 4 and alternative Adobe passhash DRM. * Per post #360, ACS 5 will no longer support passhash DRM??? * Per various sources, Adobe will be enforcing ACS 5 for all booksellers/distributors starting in July?!? Does this mean B&N will be forced to either abandon ACS and find a new way to serve up books, or abandon their current passhash DRM and adopt the new Adobe DRM? |

dropping support for passhash? Maybe they should put that on hold and focus on dropping support for hashcat!

The point is that B&N was originally going to use passhash DRM without Adobe so they should be able to do so now. |

Nor is it likely. When B&N licensed Adept for the first Nook, they licensed their proprietary ereader DRM to Adobe for incorporation into ADE alongside Adept (as passhash). There has been no indication that Adobe exerts and control over Nook's choice of DRM. In recent months there has been mounting evidence that Adept compatibility has become a negative for Nook's bottom line so if anything, this could provide them with an excuse to part ways with Adobe. Nook has been hemorrhaging market share and money so spending time and money to update their readers just to help Kobo poach their sales doesn't sound like it would be a high priority. |

To me, it sounds like a no-brainer. Adding DRM used to only add minor inconvenience and some fees; now it adds more inconvenience and more fees. How long can it take before the other publishers decide to follow Baen's lead? |

Wow. I didn't realize this would make all existing epub readers obsolete! This is absolutely the dumbest thing I have ever heard. The comment about libraries is a good one--they barely have enough readers to satisfy their patrons now. If they have to start over, they might just give up on electronic books.
Haven't publishers objected to this? This sends everybody to Amazon! |

Millions of outraged people are going to be aiming hatred at not only Adobe but also the publishers. People have been spending hundreds, thousands of dollars on books and they are not going to put up with either having to replace perfectly good machines just so that they can continue to read the books they have already bought. Nor are they going to buy all their books all over again.
People will either start pirating, or complaining to any official that will listen. I see this ending up in court or congress as well. |
