time for clean, complete uninstall, then re-install ?
I updated to 1.22 64 bit yesterday - my covers are still intact.

another thought: I no longer have 32 bit version installed, but the OP has - so is this something that show up only with both versions on same PC ?

another thought - opening a book in that 64 bit install. does calibre viewer show cover image as 1st page of book OK or is it missing there also?

Thanks for the suggestions, cybmole, but it doesn't work that way in Linux. I don't really "install" Calibre, I just unpack it into its own directory. (Under /opt for what it's worth.) So there's no chance of shared libraries from the archive remaining hanged somewhere else in the system.

And the reader never did show the cover image as the first page of a book unless it was present as such in the document, as opposed to just some image included in the ePub file and marked with cover semantics. But now it does exhibit some weird behavior: not showing images in ePub files anymore (just "broken image" placeholders), while still showing them in eReader PDB files. And yes, the images are preserved during conversion... Really, really curious.

@claudeb - perhaps you did not notice that PeterNL has reported what appears to be the same problem in Windows 64bit (see post #9), I think cybmole was responding to PeterNL's posts.

Indeed.

@PeterNL - are you seeing similar behaviour wrt covers in the reader?

yep, I know nothing about linux, though in both cases reported the symptoms suggests a more generic problem with image rendering or paths, or access permissions.

broken image place holder suggests that the OS cannot find or is not allowed to read the image in question.

Inside an ePub file the reader otherwise opens just fine?

And if you mean in the cover browser, the covers are still where they used to be in each book's folder under Calibre Library, and perfectly accessible with any other piece of software. They're even embedded correctly during conversions!

Nope, it has to be the library conflict that shows in the debug output, as Kovid pointed out. Odd indeed that it would happen the same in both Windows and Linux.

well can't speak for linux, but in the 64 bit windows case I'd be trying "run as administrator" + re checking all access permissions for calibre data locations + re-testing with all AV, anti-adware/spyware etc turned off. It's been established that the image date is there so no dded to workout whether can't find it or whether program is not allowed to access it - or, more likely not allowed to access the database file that points to it.
I'd also look at AV history to see if has quietly quarantined anything recently.

'"Curiouser and curiouser!" Cried Alice (she was so much surprised, that...)'

Hmmm - some idle thoughts:

Its probably reasonable to assume that conversion (ebook-convert.exe) would not process a cover.jpg file as an image as such... i.e. via an imaging library... it would do simple file io to copy it from the book folder into the epub container.

But the book details, cover grid etc (calibre.exe) would process the file as an image - via ImageMagick etc.

However so would the book viewer, but it looks at the embedded cover not the library copy of the cover. If the viewer uses the same imaging libraries etc as the calibre GUI then that would sort of let those libraries off the hook... why would they work in ebook-viewer.exe and not in calibre.exe.

It would be good to know if PeterNL gets the covers embedded with a conversion on his Windows 64bit system, and whether or not he can see them in the ebook-viewer and ebook-editor programs.

This is strange. I run calibre portable which is 32 bit on my Windows 7 box. I just installed Calibre 64 and like virtually every other person out there it works fine. All covers in the GUI and the viewer are as expected.

@PeterNL and @claudeb One thing to try is to return to completely virgin default settings. One way to do this is to exit calibre, rename your calibre settings directory then start calibre. All of your calibre settings will be recreated as a new install (uninstalling and reinstalling does not do this).

Thank you very much for the help everyone. I'm giving up; will continue to use Calibre without the cover browser. It was just eye candy anyway, and since the important stuff works fine, never mind.

That says you have both 32 and 64 bit Calibre installed.
Are they both at the same revision?
