The video is fascinating. Well, apart from the dire presentation style, which is essentially reading out the slides.
At 13:00 we see a slide showing the RMSDK10 is NOT YET AVAILBLE for use with Linux/ARM based ebook readers, i.e. all E-Ink based ones, and won't be available until March at the earliest. That is, it's impossible for any device maker to ship a firmware update at the moment, since they don't have the RMSDK10 necessary to do so. At 16:20 they mention the availability of "the tools", although they have the timescale wrong. The main tool for ADE has been available for five years now, not two to three. To foil the tools, now part of the decryption key will now stored on Adobe's signing server, not locally. I don't see how this is possible without also requiring an on-line connection when opening a DRMed ebook. They surely can't mean this? At 22:45 they have a compatibility matrix. Bottom line: Download with new DRM and you can't use the book without RMSDK10, so no old devices unless they get a firmware update. Confirmed by chart at 24:12 And yes, at 24:55 they show a timeline where they intend to enforce the new DRM on any books downloaded to RMSDK10 starting from MARCH! So if you download with the new ADE 3.0 from March onwards your books might not transfer to your E-Ink reader, since the new RMSDK for ebook readers won't even be released to the device developers until March. And from July this will definitely happen. All downloaded to ADE 3.0 from July will use the new DRM scheme. So unless you've got a firmware update by then, you'd better not be using ADE 3.0! Except that at 35:00 in answer to a question in the Q&A, it's confirmed that from July, the CS5 will no longer work with RMSDK9.x. That is, it will no longer be possible to get ADE ePubs without using ADE 3.0 and the new DRM, unless the retailer has not updated from CS4.x Adobe seem to be almost ignoring the problems of dedicated device manufacturers and are concentrating on app developers for Mac/Win desktops, and iOs/Android mobile devices. I anticipate lots of noise from owners of Kobo/Sony/other ADE devices during this year, as they end up with bought books that won't work on their device. The paying customers will have problems, and the pirates will have none. Sigh. |

"Currently, the plan is - Adobe will uniformly enforce the new DRM; if you do not update to the RMSDK 10 application, then your end user will not be able to download books from ACS server at that point." At least, that's what I heard. I may have misunderstood a word or two, but that's definitely the upshot of her answer. |

However, if they stick with CS4.x, a quick answer in the Q&A seemed to say that they could still work with the old DRM. But if this is truely being driven by publishers, then I expect that publishers will demand that retailers move to CS5. |

Starting in July, they'll simply remove support for ACS4 and RMSDK9. All retailers will be forced to update to ACS5 and RMSDK9 based apps and devices (every app and device on the market right now) will be unable to open new books. |

As I said, it seemed to me that one of the Q&A answers was about not updating to CS5 and whether that would still work after July. I thought the answer was that CS4/RMSDK9 would still work after July.

It looks like I gave Adobe too much credit, I didn't think they'd be this stupid. |

So is this a gift to B&N as well as Amazon? Maybe this will save B&N. I recently started purchasing at Google, but now I won't do that anymore.

Good grief. How is this going to impact OpenLibrary.org, does anyone know?

It could be. But B&N seem incapable of doing anything other than shooting themselves in the foot. I used to buy a lot of epubs from B&N, but they made it harder and harder for me to download my purchases as a file (browser-based) for sideloading. The Download button often didn't appear on my Library page for several hours ... some times not until the next day. I gave up.
