I hadn't really thought about that. If you count that, you could also include Kobo's read (read.kobobooks.com), Amazon's Kindle Cloud Reader. and Nook has some books that are available to read online as well.

And if they take away the other methods, in all those cases it suddenly magically becomes a streaming(-only) service.

Also http://Booki.sh is an online service to upload your own books to read in the browser. So there's another streaming service.

Thanks, guys, for all the replies to my question about streaming. Seems like there's an awful lot of that already going on.

Beginning to feel like a dinosaur with my simple epub 2 books on a reader on which I keep the Wifi off at all times. Certainly gonna make an additional set of backups of all my Alf'ed purchases...

True, but the streaming option is very limited by publisher participation at the moment. I see it as an addition to, not a replacement for, my eink reader... I can pick up the same book anywhere I have a browser handy and read a chapter or two if I don't have my eink reader handy.

Well, I never said I approve of the whole streamed books thing. (In fact, I don't.)

And I wasn't aware that any Kindle books are restricted due to publisher participation -- Amazon seems to think it qualifies in the manner of a reader, like the Kindles and apps. Does B&N really limit you? Why would they do that, and how do the publishers convince them that it should be disabled? (For that matter, why do the publishers even WANT this)

And Booki.sh started as a streaming-ebook system for ebooks bought from places like Readings.

Booki.sh staff said stupid things about ereaders, and the "service" didn't last for long in that format.

Your hard disks will die over time, you will have to keep making backups. I have this issue with 100gbs of my pictures, losing a few every year.

Instead I recommend you dump them on the cloud , dropbox, google drive for example...

Best buy only real books!! no drm, no need to worry about resolution, battery life, no tech distractions, lasts forever if handled correctly!

Hard disks will die indeed, but not two at once. But the cloud is a great idea; always wanted to know how those Hotfile or Megaupload customers must have felt when their files went up in a puff (a cloud?) of smoke...

Indeed, and if you bought both disks at the same time from the same mfr, same batch, same firmware, same shipping palette, the odds are good they'll both die at about the same time.

I'm a fanfic reader and some of the fandoms I follow lost a ton of stuff when Megaupload was destroyed, most of it unretrievable anywhere else now as the authors have left the fandom and none of it illegal or pirated!

The US authorities put primary Cloud based storage back years with that debacle.

Probably. But mine are from different manufacturers, bought at different times etc... Of course, the worst can always happen, but the really important stuff is also on my reader, so I think I've minimized the risk to a reasonable level. Of course, there's still floods and fires and locusts...

This is why I currently keep one of my backups on a lanyard that I can keep with me. I oughta set up a cloud backup as well, maybe once a month or so.
