I was in the same situation, decided to upgrade to 2.0.1, and miraculously during the installation I was offered the option not to delete 1.7 - so I've got them both installed now. So if 2.0.1 should cause trouble, I've still got 1.7...

ADE was such a problem to use, it didn't accept me for one reason or another or just faulted. I haven't used them to download an epub for maybe 3 years. I avoid them by using Reader for PC. (And that goes for borrowing library ebooks as well)
I do the same, but Sony Reader for PC did not work on OpenLibrary.org and I had to load ADE 2.0 side by side with Sony Reader for PC in order to download books from there.

That is actually incorrect, at least in some parts of the world. I work at a publishing company, and we pay our distributor (who in turn has an agreement with Adobe) extra for DRM. With social DRM the fee is cheaper, with no DRM it's even cheaper. I prefer to distribute as many as possible of our books without DRM for all the obvious reasons, but sometimes an author will absolutely insist on DRM. We don't actually increase the price in that case, so we pay an extra percentage.

Ultimately it is the customer who foots the bill, of course. You're correct in that very large bookstores/distributors like Amazon benefits from rolling their own in that they don't have to pay a third party for DRM, resulting in a slightly lower and more attractive average price for the end-user, but I can assure you that the cut they take is a lot more significant for (small) publishers than what the "Adobe fee" is.

How does Amazon's cut compare to other distributors cut + Adobe tax?

Thanks for that interesting link. A quote from the article that made me think:

My experience with ADE 2.0 from about a year ago was that if I stripped DRM from ebooks downloaded with 2.0, I sometimes got corrupted ebooks but the same book downloaded with 1.7 was fine, although I think ADE may have displayed it OK. If you don't do that, perhaps newer versions of ADE, or newer. versions of other tools will be fine. If you're running 1.7 and it works for you now, I'd leave it at that version unless you have to upgrade.

I suspect they might be talking about Oyster. They keep spamming my Facebook feed. They bill themselves as the Netflix of ebooks. Their app currently only works on iDevices, though.

Unless the software has changed since I ran away screaming from it, Google's book-reading app for Android allowed you to cache an entire purchased book to your local device, but obviously preferred to only let you have a little bit of it at a time, downloading bits of the book as needed as you made your way through, or fetching a chapter if you jumped ahead and selected an entirely different portion of the book.

I hated it because the instructions published for cacheing the entire book to the device (for reading without WiFi, HELLO?) repeatedly ran counter to my experience. The actions I took to finish downloading a partially loaded book (there was a little "pin icon"/blue pie chart next to each book in the library) always resulted in the exact opposite effect: it purged the book's local content entirely, and I'd have to go reload over WiFi if I so much as wanted page 1.

Yeah, there was a user==idiot problem in that chain, but even if I had mastered the Google Books magic, it was a very unpleasant experience. I don't know what GB does today. Fortunately, all the titles were available to me as Adobe ePUB downloads from the retail partner/indie bookstore website, and they've been in my Calibre library since forever now.

I don't use the Google Books app frequently, but it works correctly in my experience. You can also download your Google Books from the Google Play website as Adobe DRM epubs (and in some cases Adobe DRM PDF's).

Oh, they're all safe and sound, thanks. (I stopped buying books from Google when they cut the indie bookstores loose).

What it has come down to all this time later is that my favorite Android bookreader software (FBReader) has no DRM capabilities at all (and I think that goes for my PDF reader, also - APV Pro) so obviously any book I think about buying has to be disinfect-able.

Overdrive has it's "Overdrive Read" format, which is basically readable online in the Overdrive app.
