It seems my guess was wrong. Content server stores encrypted copies of the books. (I guess encrypting the book each time would take too long.) It's the decryption key for the book that gets encrypted for each customer.

I should have realised this, actually. Amazon's DRM works in a similar way.

Possibly a dumb question, but here goes anyway.

I just checked my version of Adobe DE and it is 1.7.2.1131. So obviously I haven't even upgraded to version 2.0 yet.

Can Adobe force me to upgrade to the new 3.0? Can it do it on the sly? Like without me specifically clicking on something that says "install Adobe DE 3.0"? (I have no trust for Adobe. None at all.)

There is no auto update for Digital Editions that I am aware of for personal computers!
you can use 2.0 its seems more nicer.. and it won't cause any issue.

it will take long time to force users to use ade 3.0
if you want new features, then you must use ade 3.0 or update your firmware or buy new ereader..
exciting features are in queue..!

I stand corrected. I had only looked at the information on 3M's site. They tout the fact that you don't need an Adobe ID. They make no mention of ADE, or of any PC app, or transfer to third party devices. 3M is not an Adobe RMSDK licensee. But the 3M app is not in the Amazon Appstore (or at least not available for Fire, as the Overdrive app is). Ha, and they say you should send email to 'kindle-feedback@amazon.com' to let Amazon know you can't read on your Kindle.

I just downloaded the 3M Cloud Reader app. The splash screen and About screen both say Adobe Reader Mobile with the Adobe logo. Also, when launching it for the first time it gave me the option of providing an Adobe ID or using a 3M ID to activate it.

DL reader on android and iOS has updated to rmsdk 10, not sure about other readers yet.

Not much chance that my ereader's (Onyx Boox) firmware will be updated.

So my ereader will not read ebooks with the new DRM, therefore I will not switch over to ADE 3.0. And it still functions well and doesn't have any sign of being at the end of its life. Would this ever be obligatory in the future and the device still works then I will have to stop buying DRM'ed epubs until the scheme has been cracked.

I personally saw issues with corrupted epubs with ADE 2.0 that I did not see with version 1.7, so I intend to stay on it for as long as possible.

Maybe I should update to 2.0 then. For ADE I take if it ain't broke don't fix it a little further than most.

I need to be sure that *any* PDF I create, fill out, and sign will work 100% in Adobe Reader and Acrobat, so it is a bad idea to use other programs than the Adobe ones.

FWIW, I've never had a single issue with Nitro and PDFs, including signatures, markups, etc. I don't install Adobe Reader or Adobe Acrobat on any of my machines anymore.
