Lovely. Just ... lovely.

So Adobe wants everyone's book-reading experience to be only as good—and reliable—as their Internet connection.

You can download as many times as possible, the acsm, no 3 times limit.
Does the website impose such limit ?

Also if you did not authorize your rmsdk client(a.k.a ereader) without an adobe id then you could run into problems restoring your ebooks if you lost your ebooks!

And ADE does not encrypt the books. It only reads by decrypting.
only owner of book has unencrypted copy
book is encrypted and stored in a mediaserver(cdn may be)
the fulfillment server serves the book to you, and also gives you a key to decrypt it. this key also is encrypted.

the drm crackers can explain in full detail on how decryption happens
for more info google for search content server manuals!

always on drm for ebooks seriously ? don't even know if its worth it.
on the other hand epub3 which has interactive or streaming video content may require connectivity.

browser based eBook reader which reads books from cloud and serves you page by page, caches the next and previous pages and also does some data mining and quickly serves you the pages may be the future if everything moves to cloud..
your books always online like gmail or this very own FORUM.

Hm... Haven't I been screaming "They will stream! They will stream!" for about 2 years now? Requiring a permanent internet connection for authentication is as 'good' as streaming.

If this is going to happen, I'll never buy an EPUB again. Then I'll get everything at Amazon and conver/extract their AZW3 to EPUB. If even that fails, I'll turn away from any mainstream writing forever.

By the way: They say Kobo uses a proprietary DRM, different from that of Adobe. AFAIK, that's only true for KEPUB. Can KEPUB be alfed? Can KEPUB be converted to EPUB reliably? Is it possible to do this when downloading using the Kobo application, or do you need to have a Kobo device to get the KEPUB from?

I think it is BAD when normal people need to resort to asking these questions, just to make sure that their books are readable and STAY readable. As usual, the fracking real pirates have no problems whatsoever.

I'd never use a browser based reader or any ereader that relied on Internet connectivity. It's too difficult to get 'always on' Internet and far too expensive to permanently connect to 3G.

I think Amazon are hitting problems with this with their cloud collections always wanting an internet connection.

Not for me. I won't use a computer or software that depends on cloud storage. If need be, I'll give up all software I use now and switch full time to Linux for my home use. If my employer wants me to install specific programs, then he'll just have to provide e a notebook.

If I can't even read a book without having to rely on a cloud or always-on connection.... well...

I'll probably start thinking to shoot myself in the head to escape this madness.

Yes Kobo DRM can be removed. Yes kepub can be converted to epub (it is an extension of epub, so epub readers can even read kepubs without conversion). Yes anyone can download kepubs using a Kobo app, same way anyone can download Amazon books using the amazon app.

Thanks. I'll have to try that then.

While I prefer an original EPUB if possible, in the end I don't really care what the format of the book is as long as it converts well to EPUB. Then I can work from there.

Of Kobo's DRM'ed offerings, all are available as KEPUBs, and most are available as ADE-wrapped epubs. (For the latter, you have to download to an ADE installation from the kobobooks website).

Once in a while, there will be no Adobe option for a title on the Kobo website, and Kobo will only offer KEPUB access: i.e., made a part of your cloudy library, which is then accessible from your home desktop Kobo client software installation, or from Kobo's Android app, or a registered Kobo device.

Kobo's hardware readers also include an ADE module that lets you authorize your Adobe ID over WiFi for "legit" sideloading of Adobe-locked books that you borrowed/bought anywhere.

GeoffR has already answered your other questions.

I thought KEYPUBs relied on some sort of on-device SQLite(-ish) database back-end for some stuff. Is that not the case?

Thanks! I'm curious -- does Barnes & Noble use Adobe Content Servers for fulfillment or their own servers? If B&N uses their own servers and their own encryption, what's their connection to Adobe? Is it simply that their Nook readers use RMSDK?

The tool which deals with kepubs downloaded to your local Kobo desktop library certainly inventories that library and enumerates the titles, even the ones you're not interested in at the moment. And at the end, the resulting file of the title you choose is set to '.epub', so if there are database-maintained things (syncing/bookmarking/etc?) you like about your kepubs, you're of course going to lose them once the title is "cut loose" and is an epub.

They use content server but not the standard encryption which was updated. They use the passhash encryption option, which gives them some control.

Thanks Akshayy! Your insights into ADE, ACS, DRM and B&N have been fascinating and are much appreciated.

Thanks. The syncing/bookmarking is of course trivial. I guess I thought the database backend was more integral to the KEYPUB format than that. Happy to be wrong, though.
