This also does raise the question of what Overdrive will do. If anything, this would be even less in the interest of their primary customer (libraries). Librarians do not want to have to explain to angry patrons why they can no longer use their three year old e-reader to download books.
Libraries are already hedging their bets by lining up deals with Overdrive competitors (3M Cloud library, Axis 360). They produce tablet apps as well as dedicated devices that you can check out from the library. At least 3M does not use Adobe DRM technology. Overdrive could also transition away from Adobe, starting with their tablet apps. As it is their apps already do not support side loaded ePub with Adobe DRM.

A more 'controlled' distribution system (one where no user ever gets access to an epub file) should be more acceptable to more publishers. (I have not gotten around to checking out the selection for Axis 360, which a couple of my libraries have, but most likely they have some publishers lined up that Overdrive has not got- another reason for libraries to seek out alternatives)

I could see support for personal ereaders going away entirely.

Great.

But why then can I copy-paste the text?

If anyone wants to play around comparing different ADE versions, Adobe has a small library of "sample" books to try out your ADE installation.

Adobe sample library

I tried the "statuscheck" trick and oddly (to me, anyway) their sample content server reports version 4.1.0.

Since there are no accounts associated with the samples, you can download as many copies of the books with as many different installations of ADE as you want to see what, if anything, is different. It'll also be interesting to check every now and again to see if the server updates to Content Server 5.

Check the "item info" in ADE. Most books have copying disallowed, but some have other rules.

Nearly all of the books in my library look like this:

Quote:
Permissions set by the publisher
Allow viewing: on any device
Allow copying: not allowed
Allow printing: not allowed
I looked through and found a weird one, though.

Quote:
Permissions set by the publisher
Allow viewing: on any device
Allow copying: 0 copies with an additional copy accrued every 1 minute, capped at 1 copy, on any device
Allow printing: 0 pages, on this computer, at a maximum resolution of 200 dpi

Go ahead Adobe, make those DRM shackles thicker than before if it makes you happy. I did not use Digital editions before and I certainly won't use it now that it's even more of a pain.
And I wonder why anyone would want to pay to be shackled like that.

Anyway. I'll not update to ADE 3.0. And I'll buy books on Amazon instead - until they update their DRM too, I guess. Then... then... there's always Smashwords, I guess. And paper books. Who needs computers anyhow. Whoever invented these useless things wasted a lot of people's time.

On the Amazon kindle the library book will not disappear until you connect to wifi at or after the end of the loan period. Using ADE with nook, the book becomes unopenable at the end of the loan period. For a while it would remain open but could not reopen at the end of the loan period, but I think that was fixed. The reason that the kindle loan works that way is that the kindle does not sync date-time using its own internal clock (which is completely user-set), but rather uses the cloud/Amazon's servers to determine whether the loan is over.

So you can kind of extend the loan on kindle but at the cost of not downloading anything else over wifi.

This instead gives me an idea. Time used based loan instead of fixed period loan.
The library could allow you to read for 200 hrs over many years. Instead of fixed 1 week loan.. interesting idea.
I think that's interesting too. I wonder if there would be longer periods for books like War and Peace that may take more than 200 hours to complete.

I find it really interesting that Adobe is pushing the DRM so hard that they had a rep come to this forum to try and spin it, but there were at least two threads recently celebrating that libraries and Overdrive are moving to non-DRMed mp3 audiobooks.

I guess I'm really lucky that in the genre I like reading in, a lot of the books I get from the library are smaller publishers who provide open epubs.

Apologies if I missed a post where this was already mentioned, but in this article, the blogger says that this version of DRM is just a stop-gap to Adobe's goal to convert to an "always-on" scheme that will require the device to be connected to the internet at all times.

Quote:
I was told by some members of the W3C that Adobe is planning a new online verification tool that queries a an always on internet connection. This is something that many game companies are employing to curb piracy, such as Electronic Arts. Likely, we will not see this “Always Online DRM” for another year or two. Companies need to adjust to the new higher form of encryption in the here and now.

Well, it's Tweedle Dum from goodereader - wouldn't give too much credit to anything he says. (He might still be right in this case...)

Is that really true about the 3M Cloud Library? My library has it, and I can check out books and download them to Adobe Digital Editions.

Obviously, I'd advise people to only download with ADE 2.0, not ADE 3.0.
Mmm, what ???
It's stupid if it works that way. I mean, no reader have been updated to read book with the new DRM.

That would be an appalling system. My wifi is hardly turned on and I doubt we'd ever get wifi on British transport and the underground.
