I'm not entirely sure what process occurs when you "authorise" an ereader device to use Adobe DRM, but I did notice at the start of the year that my old copy of ADE 1.7.2 would not let me authorise my new Kobo Aura. I had to download ADE 2.0.1 (latest at the time) to do so.

At some point will you require ADE 3 to authorise a new ereader?

I don't think there will be a difference. But it wouldn't hurt to download the 2.0.1 installer just in case.

Thought so, thanks. (Interestingly, I must have had this clever idea myself some time ago, because I found the 2.0.1 installer already sitting on my HD.)

Anyway, I thought what the heck and just installed it. Was very surprised to find that it allowed me to keep 1.7 installed along wth 2.0.1. Nice.

That's precisely the issue. So from now on, before I buy a book at Kobobooks, I not only have to put a preview copy in my library first (so I that can see the format and make sure it is an epub, which I have to do ever since they "improved" the store), but I now also have to find, download and analyze a DRM-ed but free book to ensure that I will be able to disinfect it and use it on a device of my choice.

And I have to do this so that people who who don't buy books in the first place have a theoretically harder time to distribute the books that they never buy?

(As long as 2.x works, I don't care, but this is the kind of thing that I can see vendors enforce swiftly, since quite a few seem to believe that piracy does cost them a large amount of money. Hint: It doesn't. Pissing off your customers does.)

I don't remember doing this with my Kobo Aura but tbh it was set up by WHSmith so I'm not sure what they did.

Technically speaking though say I did need to download and authorise a new Kobo using a ADE 3 would that have any effect on reading side loaded books, which I load via Calibre? Because if that happened I would certainly avoid buying from the Kobo store, even with discount coupons. I'd rather pay more for DRM free, something I often do anyway.

Is it definitely authorised? Check the Settings > Accounts page, the entries for Kobo and Adobe are separate, and it was the latter that seemed to require ADE 2.0.1. (Which has a much nicer UI than ADE 1.7.2, for what it is worth.)

It's not authorised. I don't download books direct to my Aura through the Kobo desktop. I used to at first but now I download any Adobe books direct into Adobe Digital Editions 2 and then load them into Calibre, and then onto my Kobo via Calibre.

Hopefully if I can avoid updating Adobe Digital Editions I can avoid be affected at all.

Strictly speaking, it is the retailers that adopt the overbearing DRM that will be losing money if, as many here suggest, customers take their business to Amazon.

I do think that there are several ways this could play out, most of which would render the whole effort by Adobe futile. The only way it will really be significant is if they do implement it in the most restrictive of ways to their client bookstores.

ADOBE might be that desperate for relevance but I wouldn't assume it upfront.

Is this Adobe's official position? "Bad luck about your ereader, but you can always read sitting at your PC or squinting at your phone"?

I doubt that an official Adobe spokesman would put it like that, but yes, that's essentially what will happen with the new DRM.

Once a retailer is using CS4.2 or CS5, and you download a book using ADE 3.0, it will use the new DRM and won't work on your old ADE 2.0 devices.

Could even be a bit of a "last hurrah" powerplay between Adobe and the Big 5 against Amazon. If they get ePub ebooks/devices/vendors/libraries all locked down with "Hardened DRM," how much leverage would the publishers then have to force Amazon's hand (by withholding titles) concerning their own (now clearly insufficient) proprietary DRM?

The "upgrade" would still have to happen almost all at once to be able to pull something like that off, so I don't see anything like that really having much of a chance of succeeding.

Mostly, I see it hurting the smaller ePub stores and helping Amazon if resellers were forced (piecemeal) to adopt the more strict DRM scheme "at gunpoint." And if it's not at gunpoint, I can't see them upgrading at all.

Interesting times ahead.

My book purchasing workflow is the same as yours. ADE is only there to process the acsm file, and I don't really need to have the reader authorised at all.

The wrinkle is overdrive - borrowing library books is likely to require an authorised device.

This reminds me of the Sony CD debacle, the ordinary person on the street is not going to be happy if books no longer work on there Ereaders. I imagine the press would have a field day.
