You could use Sony Reader for PC to download instead of ADE, and then not upgrade to their next version until the tool issue is resolved.

@Akshayy: I see from the Getting Started guide that ADE 3.0 will continue to support epubs that use bookseller-specific unlock codes (the type of Adobe DRM used by Barnes & Noble) instead of acsm files. Do you know if any of the changes you've mentioned affect bookseller-specific Adobe DRM or does it only apply to DRM that uses acsm files?
In other words, when it comes to ebooks purchased from Barnes & Noble, will it ever make a difference which version of ADE or which ereader I open it in first? Thanks! Last edited by Jane12; 01-26-2014 at 01:23 AM. |

now I understand your concern, you want to know for sure before you purchase! If you are a little concerned, buy a latest free book and check inside, so new paid books also should use the same. wait for kobo to announce maintenance and updates, I am pretty sure they won't push a secret ninja update, they will inform all the customers and even we would know it when they update, I can post that news for you. ultimately if kobo decides to use new drm for new books with new acs server, they must update their customers kobo readers, so everything will work fine! also there is backward compatibility. old books can be read too on new device, reader, updated firmware. |

"They must"? How is this enforced? Any presumption that companies won't screw their customers around is a very naive one indeed. Have you been reading the replies in this thread? Are you aware of the long history of DRM being abandoned and leaving customers high and dry without access to their purchases? |

See the system is designed to work properly and not break in all most all situations. It breaks only if you open new drm books in old reader. BUT You would end up with new DRM books only if you have the ability the read such a book. Which means you can always read it on ADE 3.0 or Android or iOS apps and never be left high and dry. I came here to see if there are problems reading, and then help fix it. |

I don't know why Akshayy has chosen to join this FOrum and share his ADE knowledge with us but I am pleased he/she has.
Akshayy is telling us what he knows and tries to help by answering our queries. I would not like to see him/her used to voice one's anger at Adobe and ADE programmers. Perhaps those comments could be emailed directly to ADE. |

I doubt Akshayy has the ability to overturn the momentum that certain business decisions (ah-hem!) have put in motion, and s/he definitely isn't the one responsible for those policies. |

Discussions like this always make me very grateful that I read a genre (romance) that has lots of independent publishers all selling ebooks DRM free, we even have a one shop all store (like Amazon) called Allromance, where books can be purchased from all the publishers, including self published novels, which in my genre are very good.
I wonder when publishers and ebook sellers will finally realise DRM and encryption actually costs them sales, or will if they make it too hard. |

My first choice in buying an ebook is to go to a guaranteed DRM-free source, like Baen or Smashwords. If I have to go with a DRM-ed copy, my first choice is Barnes & Noble, because I can disinfect it on my Linux netbook. My second choice is Amazon, because of their selection and pricing strategy, but I have to use my Windows box to disinfect it. I've bought a few books at Kobo, and I enjoy their coupons, but I have to download them on my Windows box, which is already inconvenient. If there's even a hint that I'll waste money on an ebook that can't be "Alf'ed" I won't bother with them, no matter what the coupon.
Sorry, Akshayy, but you're perfecting something that I want to avoid. |
