Original Kindle DX Finally Wears Out
I have to say i can't complain - i bought the thing in Nov 2009, and it's only the 'Next Page' button that has failed. Scarcely a day has passed when i haven't used it.
I thought i'd post this here, since i disassembled the thing, to get a look under the button to see if all it required was cleaning. Sadly i'm not familiar with how the button makes electrical contact - but it's clear that the central contact had detached and this is why i couldn't 'next page'. The contact seems to involve a small yellow circle of sticky plastic, and an associated smaller white metallic circle with bare metal on one side (there are a few of these attached under the key - white face showing, no yellow plastic disc - but only this one is loose). A gust of wind made possible repair academic, but i thought i'd ask here if anyone has any knowledge of this topic, just in case. |

Sounds like you had a good run with your old, original DX. If I were you I'd treat myself to the newer DXG while they are still in stock. Much better contrast than the older version and only ~$200 new now. Also, might be an idea to phone Kindle CS and explain your problem. They may give you a discount on a new one, you never know!

Your earlier post of 5/5/2011, indicates that you got a new one on (or close) to that date of 2011, rather than in 2009.

Sounds like that was a replacement DX. Amazon generally tries to replace it with the same version if they have any new or reconditioned ones in stock.

Ack! Thank you for that correction, i'd completely forgotten. Less impressive lifespan then. Wish i had the old one so i could scavenge parts.

You can, of course, replace the motherboard, and get another few years out of it.

I would advise staying away from the (older) DX model and go with the (not as old) DX-G model.
The screen is so much better. |

Actually, I believe the page turn buttons are on the mid-board in the DX. You can get one for $8. That has to be worth it:
