Pretty cool, and considering the limitations of the actual display, probably the most you can do with it.

Amazing!
I wished I could get my hands on this edition, especially knowing it would have costed me only $6! Now some dude on internet is selling those screens for $30. I wished one could create their own chip somewhere... |

I bought mine a Borders Bookstore. Try any of larger bookstores or news stands in your area.

They're probably all gone by now. I still have one, though.

Maybe a dumb question, but I noticed in that one video of someone trying real hard to destroy the eInk screen that the screen appears to be very flexible.
Anyone have any idea why the Esquire screen doesn't suffer from the same fragility as the screens used in the various eInk devices (iRex, Cybook, Sony, etc.)? Another way of asking the question would be why isn't this flexible screen used elsewhere? -Jeff |

1. It's smaller
2. It's not pixel-addressable |

...okay, you stated a difference in functionality, I'm asking about the materials used to manufacture the screen.
Why the difference in flexibility? Did eInk make these screens for Esquire? Is this a new or next generation substrate for eInk? |

I guess to address specific pixels you need precision which is not achieveable with plastic substrate yet and needs glass.

Seems to me the screen also didn't suffer from the black refresh.

The big difference is that the Esquire eInk screen is entirely plastic. All the current 6" eInk readers have a screen with a glass layer, used because methods of creating large numbers of transistors across a glass substrate are well developed for use in LCDs.
Fully plastic eInk screens for ebook readers should be with us next year, which should mean that the next generation of ebook readers will be much more robust. Quote:
