Yes, that's why I wrote "good-quality reflective LCD display" :-)
Let's hope this new display is better than those that are already available. It would be very good news! |

I would gladly accept the limited number of colors to get rid of the backlight. The real problem is contrast. Decent contrast is needed for anything else than black text on a white(ish) background.

That's one of the very good points of this new display. It has very good contrast, compared to its E-Ink rivals.

The round screen is already being used in the Garmin Forerunner 620 sports GPS/Watch

In 2000 I purchased a Compaq Ipaq windows CE 3.5 inch PDA. It was a 12 bit color lcd with reflective capabilities. I was able to extend battery life on a long flight by turning off the side light (or was it back light?) and just using overhead lighting. It was pretty good for the time.

Pretty good for the time. I had a Sony Clie SJ-20 with a greyscale TFT screen in 2003 or 3, and it was also very good for the time. But still used lots of power. Even with backlight off it was only good for a day or two. |

Personally, while the reflectance (?) and whiteness of e-ink Carta is adequate, to me, it's still not good enough. However, non-backlit screen tech seems to have really hit a wall, disappointingly. Maybe the advances are going to come from the conventional backlit LCD side.

I love eink, but I hope that these readers will be fast like an Android LCD slate.

Not good enough for what, charmian? Ie, what would you like to be able to do with an eInk device that the current reflectance and whiteness prevents you from doing?

I want it to be whiter. I don't like the way it looks. Right now it's somewhat better than newsprint, but I want it to be more comparable to higher quality paper.
