Thanks to everyone for the clarification. I actually have an electric kettle, but it's stainless steel. I never thought of one being plastic, but of course they could be.

Were I writing the sentence though I would say that she switched the kettle on, as being more illustrative; but that's probably the American (and the editor) in me.

"Put the kettle on" is the standard English phrase.

I use it to keep my stock hot and just pour it directly from the kettle to the pot. It beats keeping a second pot on the stove simmering the stock. It is also less messy then using a ladle to add the stock to the rice.

You put stock into a kettle? A Brit would never do that. It'd make the tea taste funny, don't you know

I use the second pot and ladle method.

I use the second pot and ladle method.

The outside is plastic, but the inside is stainless steel. I rinse it out as soon as I am finished using it so it does not collect off flavors or odors.
