A much misunderstood phrase. It makes perfect sense in its original context, which was certainly legal, so I hope it's the right one. |

A good thought and an interesting phrase, but, unfortunately, not the correct one in this instance.

"The phrase is derived from a legal principle of republican Rome: exceptio probat regulam in casibus non exceptis ("the exception confirms the rule in cases not excepted"), a concept first proposed by Cicero in his defence of Lucius Cornelius Balbus" Hmm... I'm puzzled, which is sort of the idea.

I always thought it was attributed to the factory owner (something like that?) Otto Kaiser signing stuff off using his initials.

3. I think it has to do with the relationship of Salisbury (Christian name Robert) to Balfour, his nephew. Hence, "Bob's your uncle."

I believe 5. refers to "rule of thumb" in its supposed sense that a man was permitted to beat his wife with a stick no wider than his thumb. This is almost certainly apocryphal, though often cited!
"Rule of thumb"'s origin is probably from using the thumb as a rough measure in carpentry, etc. This usage goes back centuries, and is still fairly common. Last edited by Shayne Parkinson; 01-22-2014 at 06:29 PM. |
