Meanwhile, reading the third volume of the Tanyth Fairport trilogy - Hermit of Lammas Wood, by Nathan Lowell. This is an oddly satisfying series. The pace is slow, not much happens, and while there is conflict and danger, it never overshadows the underlying gentleness of the story. I come away from reading these books satisfied and relaxed, like a quiet natter with an old friend over a cup of afternoon tea. The series is five of five for me, and highly recommended if you enjoy quieter pleasures.

I have felt the same about Janet Evanovich, but I think she's back on track with the new one, Takedown Twenty. Still I wish things would change in the series, like Stephanie should actually marry either Morelli or Ranger. That would make for some good comedy.

Wow! Christie/Poirot certainly makes for an interesting and entertaining read! Highly Enjoyable!

Good grief is she STILL dithering? That's a sure sign that a series has gone totally stagnant. Characters need to grow and change, relationships need to mature. Otherwise, it's just writing to a formula and totally uninteresting.

Yes, it's still the same old formula. Eating a lot of chicken and donuts with Lula, going to viewings with Grandma, eating at the parents, cars blowing up, etc, nothing really changes. Probably why I stopped buying them and just borrow from the library.

Life's too short. It was funny and fun for about the first 5 of them. And still worth my time reading for the next few after that. But I'm done.

I gave up on those around #14. Though I'll admit I still miss Morelli. I believe JE has stated she never intends to allow Steph to choose, and I'm in the camp where I want to see character growth.

As CRussel noted, life's too short and my TBR pile too large to keep going with that one.

I understand. I keep chugging along with it though, as it's still good for a few giggles and a quick read.

My wife read each and every one of them... in English! She said the writing was so simple that she usually didn't need to use a dictionary more than once on every page.

I've never participated in these forums before, but it seems fun and I've really enjoyed pouring over everyone's reading. So, I set a goal for the year and plan on posting about my reading as well.
So far in 2014 I've read:

The Orenda by Joseph Boyden. I've read all his books. They're all good, this one is great! The violence is heavy and graphic, but necessary to be accurate and to avoid romanticizing 15th century Native Canadian life.

The Brutal Telling by Louise Penny. 5th in her Inspector Gamache series. These are all great and I really enjoyed this one. There are 9 in the series and I'll likely complete all over the next few months.

Going Home Again by Dennis Bock. Really really good book! This reminded me a little of A Sense of an Ending by Julian Barnes that won the Man Booker a couple of years ago.

Caught by Lisa Moore. Another great book. The plot is somewhat lighter than her brilliant book February, but the writing style is the same and I just couldn't put it down.

Sourcery still hasn't come in, so I read the short story collection Fire Watch. Overall it was only "OK" to me. A couple stories were good, but Fire Watch was the best. You probably want to read The Enemy, which is #8 in the Reacher series, next if you plan to continue. It is a prequel to Killing floor. I read all of them through Nothing To Lose. My favorite was Bad Luck And Trouble. NTL was a hack job.

I will continue the series, slowly, but I will probably just read them in published order. It is easier for me to keep track that way and I don't need to worry about spoiling anything for myself by trying to see if I am reading them in the correct internal chronology. Thanks for the suggestion though.

Finished it, and enjoyed it every bit as much as I expected. Now, on to something very different -- The Forever Engine, by Frank Chadwick. This is Steam-Punk, not exactly my genre (!), but his first book was so good, I just have to try this one.

I finished it a few days ago. I liked his first book best, but this one was still about a 4.8 out of 5.
