I finished re-reading Eye of the World by Robert Jordan. It's still a wonderful fantasy book, IMO. Of course, I'm biased since it's my favorite. I will be reading one Wheel of Time book every month or so until I finally finish the series.

Next, I'm going to read Timeless by Gail Carriger, the last book in her Parasol Protectorate series. Been enjoying these a lot!

Just finished Undisputed Truth by Mike Tyson and Larry Sloman.

Quite .. ahem .. eventful, and a great read.

After trying for a little over a week, I finally decided to give up on Swan Song for now. I just couldn't get into it; I'm thinking its a mood thing. I plan to try again at a later date (possibly this summer).

Instead, I'm now reading A Nameless Witch by A. Lee Martinez.
I'm only 3 chapters (38 pgs.) in and I'm loving it. Hopefully, I'll be able to sneak in some reading time at work tomorrow!

I'm almost 1/3 through Doctor Sleep by Stephen King, but giving it a rest tonight because I need something funny. So, it's going to be a short story entitled Antiques Slay Ride by Barbara Allen. Quirky mystery cozy in a series that surrounds antiques and collectables. I've read several of the novels before, although not caught up with the series as it is now.

Just starting "Judgment Days: Lyndon Baines Johnson, Martin Luther King, Jr., and the Laws That Changed America", since today is Martin Luther King Jr Day, and this year is the 50th anniversary of the passage of the 1964 Civil Rights Act. Also, it's on sale at Amazon (see Arcadata's thread ). I was in grade school then, and aware of those events at a distance, like the Mississippi civil rights workers murders by the Klan - it all seems so far away now.

I've finished a couple more books recently:

We by Yevgeny Zamyatin is an early dystopia, first published in English in 1924, influencing Brave New World and Nineteen Eighty-Four. It's about conformity and its effect on the creative spirit. It's an interesting read, but I found it quite hard going. There are a lot of incomplete sentences in the speech, leaving you to infer the meaning, and the book often refers to people using some metaphor based on their physical appearance. You can just about keep track, and it's a fairly short book, but I think it's mainly only of academic interest now.

Slow River by Nicola Griffith. I really liked this. It's quite grim and desperate at times, but I always wanted the heroine to come through it and I always wanted to know what was going to happen next. It's an SF novel, about a young rich girl who is kidnapped and left for dead in a strange city, and how she tries to build a new life for herself.

I'm now reading A Perfect Evil by Alex Kava for my alphabetic detective challenge, and so far it's readable enough but nothing special. I'm reading my second-hand paperbacks in reverse order of condition, and this one's a bit tattered. I kind of just want to push through it and get onto something else.

I am currently reading Dawn of Swords, the first book in a new series called The Breaking World, by my very favorite author David Dalglish.

I care for neither fantasy nor series of any genre. Currently, though, I'm in the second book of Elizabeth Bear's Eternal Sky series, and I'm loving it.

Perhaps you need to revise your opinion, and say that you don't care for bad fantasy or flabby series.

An interesting pair of observations! And I must remember the term 'flabby series' for use at some appropriate future time!

Alan Dean Foster's Flinx series definitely got flabby in the second half.

You know, I'm willing to consider it.

Since the past few months have seen me happily switch from a Sony reader to a Kindle, there's no telling where this will stop.

It did indeed. I enjoyed the first few, then got seriously bored with it. There are others I can think of too, such as the alphabet mysteries of Sue Grafton, and the Stephanie Plum novels of Janet Evanovich. And, much as I have enjoyed most of the Honor Harrington series, there's some definite flab in the middle of it.

Meanwhile, reading the third volume of the Tanyth Fairport trilogy - Hermit of Lammas Wood, by Nathan Lowell. This is an oddly satisfying series. The pace is slow, not much happens, and while there is conflict and danger, it never overshadows the underlying gentleness of the story. I come away from reading these books satisfied and relaxed, like a quiet natter with an old friend over a cup of afternoon tea. The series is five of five for me, and highly recommended if you enjoy quieter pleasures.
