Well, I've gone through and added my Asimov and Analog subscriptions into the expected months for the rest of the year, so I shouldn't be caught out again.

I am also going to try to read all the books I buy this year. Of the 12 books I've bought this month, I've read six. But since I got six of them over the past two days (in my hands, not ordered), that's pretty good.

Mind you, I'm also trying to read all the unread books I still have from 2003 (6) and 2004 (49!), which may be just too much.

I'll have fun trying though!

I may be required to purchase a book this month. One of my credit cards sent me a cancellation notice if I don't use it in the next 30 days. Since it doesn't offer a cashback reward I'll probably just use it on a discounted (75% off) title from my TBR list.

Some people are emotional eaters. Apparently, I'm an emotional reader (and shopper). Luckily, I limited myself to one book at $2.99, and yes, I'm reading it immediately!

This brings my total to $15.26 (including tax) for 12 books + a few bonuses in January so far.

Ah, when you said $40 a month, I was sure you actually meant $50

I was purchase free so far this year (with at least enough books for four or five years on my TBR list). That changed this weekend with the purchase of The Original Atheists.

At least it's an interesting read so far, and makes up one of the five philosophy books I want to read for the 2014 challenge.

$50/month wouldn't have been much of a challenge. $40 isn't too tight and I think I'll make it.

If I do, I might go for $35/month in 2015.

It's important to have dreams and goals, Apache. Of course, with goals they should be "stretch" goals, but not impossible ones. His $40 goal is a stretch goal, certainly, based on past experience. We'll have to see about anything beyond that, however.

And I shouldn't talk. Though as long as I don't count my Audible subscription credits into this, I'm doing OK so far this month.

If I average my ebook spend over the past four years, I've spent $36.74/month. So I really ought to be able to keep under $40/month.

Well, if I average mine it's probably more than that, but not by much. Unfortunately, that's because I only bought my first eReader about 3 years ago. So I had a year with no eBook purchases at all.

I bought my first ebook in late January, 2002, nearly 12 years ago!

After my complete absence from anything ebook related other than my eReader for more than a year... I finally managed to go through my whole list of books to read and didn't buy a single one.

But now that it's over and I need something new to read... after a 2 minute visit to Baen: $60 out; 16 books in.

Successfully maintaining a monthly budget goal wouldn't be very impressive in my case. Last year I budgeted $150/month but only spent $5 on average each month. Instead I shoot for reading a minimum number of books (18). Conservative but I prefer realistic goals. No disappointments.

I do not track how much I spend a month on books. I am afraid that it will be more than I even suspect.
