Question on selecting a model

Hi,

I've been a lurker on mobileread for about five years, and am still using a Sony PRS-505 reader. However, I'm thinking that it might be time to upgrade, and I'm looking pretty seriously into the Kobo readers. Unfortunately, I don't have anywhere local to go try one except for Family Christian in San Antonio, and they only stock the touch, mini, and Arc.

So without being able to test one personally, I'm left with asking for recommendations. Which model kobo would you recommend and why? I'm looking at the Glo, Aura, or Aura HD. Please bear in mind that I'm only going to get one model. I know that there are folks on here who have one of each, and that's fine, but I only intend on getting one.

Thanks in advance for your opinions and recommendations.

For me, the Glo is the most comfortable to hold without a case. It also happens to be the most economical of the three.

Glo here as well. I do use a slim fitting sleep cover that I love, but for me the smaller size over the Aura HD, and the IR screen and matte finish bezel over the Aura, are what makes me select the Glo and it fits my needs perfectly. That it's the cheapest of the 3 is just icing, I would pay a higher price for the one that I preferred.

Different models will appeal to different people for different reasons so it'll help if you identify which areas you're interested in. For example, what do you perceive as the shortcomings of your PRS-505?

Good question. While I've got a light wedge cover for it that helps read at night, it's not the most comfortable to hold and read, so I think I'd like something lighter. Also, the wifi capabilities of the newer models are a plus as well. The readers that I've looked at in stores also seem to have a whiter screen than the 505 has. Mine is kind gray looking. Also, it only supports three font sizes. Oh, and I think that I'd just like to have something new.

I know that a Touch wasn't on your poll, but since it's at a local store, is there a reason you've decided against one? If you're looking for an e-ink reader with wifi, that will fit the bill.

That's a fair question. The answer is that I'm really wanting the ComfortLight capability, and neither the touch nor the mini have it.

I voted for HD, but if you're looking for something smaller and lighter the Aura would be a very good choice.

I love the form factor of my Aura, small and light, although without the light on, my sister's HD has the better screen contrast. I always use the light at a level to improve the screen contrast without it looking like a backlit screen.

I own all three. The Aura HD is the one I reach for the most, because of the bigger screen. But they're all nice.

I find smaller screen with smaller overall size Kobo Mini ideal to most always have with me in a pocket.

Aura HD is nice for the bigger size (and personal preference for the IR touch). It is slightly heavier than the Glo or Aura and I do miss the quilted back, but I still use it over my older Kobo's.

If I were buying from scratch now, I'd buy an Aura (inspecting it in-store first for light guide defects). Size/weight is a key factor for me, light is essential, and I'd really like the two-finger-swipe brightness adjustment.

I appreciate the high resolution of the HD since I do a lot of reading.

I also like the light for reading at night, and I love the Pocket service for reading articles. I guess all three of the models you mention have Pocket and the light. You probably can't go wrong with any of them.
