I haven't read anything by Lee Child, so I have high expectations given the popularity. Of course, it could be like James Patterson or Dan Brown who I haven't cared much for; I have only read 1 book by each so far though, maybe my selection wasn't optimal.
Killing Floor was a lot of fun! Read more than I should have to get it finished today. Fortunately, I was not disappointed like I was with Patterson and Brown, although I didn't care for his involvement with Roscoe. For being such a competent police officer (as stated by Finley and Reacher) you would think she would be a little more cautious when hooking up with someone rather than dropping her shorts as soon as someone comes into town. I understand that is the cliche for this type of thing though, so I can let it slide.

Next up is either Sourcery by Terry Pratchett or back to Fire Watch by Connie Willis. I am #2 on the waiting list for Sourcery, so I wiill only start that if it gets in by Monday.

Finished "The Chosen" by S.M. Stirling and David Drake. This is the 6th book in the "General" series, and is set some 150 years after the end of the original 5-book "Raj Whitehall" part of the series. The scene now switches to the planet Visager where one militaristic nation ("The Chosen" of the title) is about to mount an all-out war to conquer the planet. The ancient battle computer "Center", and the downloaded personality of Raj Whitehall, aid two young men to prevent the conquest.

Excellent military SF. Highly recommended.

I just finished Ne les crois pas by Sebastian Fitzek (Amokspiel being the original title in German). That's a nice thriller with several twists and I had a hard time finding the bad guy.
I'm still reading What color is your parachute, but I'll start another non-fiction book soon.

Edit: it was supposed to be "another *fiction* book soon".

You probably want to read The Enemy, which is #8 in the Reacher series, next if you plan to continue. It is a prequel to Killing floor. I read all of them through Nothing To Lose. My favorite was Bad Luck And Trouble. NTL was a hack job.

I really hope I can complete Swan Song before the end of the month though, so that I can fulfill my January challenge for the FoF group over at GoodReads.

Lightening up seems to have helped. I finished M Is for Mama's Boy yesterday and am now 1/3 of the way through Prince Caspian... If I'm lucky, I'll be able to finish it tonight.

I had a bit more time today, so I started and finished off The Body at the Tower, second book in Y. S. Lee's The Agency series - a Victorian-era young adult mystery with a young half-Chinese heroine as the protagonist.

I enjoyed the first book in the series back when I read it in 2012 and immediately bought the next two books at the time (they were on sale!), and I may have enjoyed this second book even more. I'm certainly glad I have the third one already, even if I won't read it immediately.

Dawn of Swords by Dave Dalglish&Robert J Duperre

Quote:
On the young world of Dezrel, brother gods Karak and Ashhur, fleeing their own failed world, recreate mankind in an attempt to make amends. The fledgling race of humanity is guided by the First Families, men and women who will not age so long as their hearts remain devoted to their deities.
But quickly the realms are thrown into chaos by the construction of the Temple of the Flesh, built by exiled children of Karak in the unclaimed land of Haven that lies between the two kingdoms. Those of the Temple refuse to bend knee to either god, no matter the risk. Thus comes Karak’s ultimatum to the people of Haven: destroy the Temple, or he will destroy it himself. But his fellow brother god, Ashur, will not sit idly by while thousands of innocents die. . . .

Can Jacob Eveningstar, the First Man to be given life and Ashhur’s most trusted servant, prevent the coming bloodshed which threatens the survival of the fledgling human race?

But first, a re-read of the 2nd volume in the series, Zypheria's Call since I don't remember anything about it by now.
ETA: This was a relaxing and very enjoyable read, just as it was the first time. Not all that much action, but who cares. I come away from reading this feeling good.

Well, I got so caught up in Archer's Beach that I went right into Carousel Sun. The first few chapters were slow, too much telling us about things we should already know, and just didn't feel like I knew where we were going. But then I got completely caught up in the story and ended up shirking other duties to find time to read more. I ended up loving the book and highly recommend this series if you could enjoy some fantasy set in an almost real Maine seashore. As always, Ms. Lee does a superb job with characters and Carousel Sun gives us more from our favourites of Carousel Tides while introducing some new ones we'll want more from. Especially Peggy "The Fixer" Marr, sent in from corporate in Jersey to take over the Midway outside the amusement park.

Yay! I finished Prince Caspian about a half hour ago! I really liked the story and I can't wait to read the next one. Although I was familiar with The Lion the Witch and the Wardrobe, The Chronicles of Narnia are a first time read for me.

Very fun! Book 3, The Voyage of the Dawn Treader, was always one of my favorites of the series. I haven't read them for at least 5 years, but I try to read them every few years. The Lion, The Witch and the Wardrobe was the first novel I ever read on my own, well half of on my own, my mother couldn't read it to me as fast as I could read to myself, so I made her quit reading and let me do it myself. Now I am hoping my girls will do that to me someday soon now that we are getting into reading books with them instead of just picture books. My 5 y.o. has finally developed a long enough attention span to enjoy a book without pictures. Right now it is Charlotte's Web but she loved Rikki-Tikki-Tavi last year too.

I've read Blood Brothers by James Rollins and Rebecca Cantrell last night, it's a short story in The Order of the Sanguines series. I must say I'm starting to hate those "short story exclusives" released just before a new full book in a series. Most of the time the short story is shorter than the taster of the new full book (usually the first couple of chapters).

I don't mind them as much if they're stand alone stories but I hate it even more when a new character is introduced or something important for the series as a whole happens which is either repeated in the same words in the next full story or is not summarized at all in the next book and you're left wondering what you've missed.

How sweet!

Prince Caspian was great storytelling. I hope I enjoy the others as much as I did this one. I liked TLtWatW, but I liked Prince Caspian more.

I don't remember my first book, but I was just commenting yesterday (on GR) how The Little House on the Prarie was my first series. I took the entire boxed set with me everywhere I went until I had finished reading all of them. I plan to reread them sometime soon.

And it was fun, so long as one didn't think too hard about it.

And then I read This Rough Magic by Mercedes Lackey, Eric Flint and Dave Freer, the sequel to The Shadow of the Lion.

Most enjoyable, in a mid-16th century magical mediterranean. There are two more in the series (so far), and I'm looking forward to them.

But now, a recent purchase: A History of the English Speaking Peoples, Vol. 1 by Sir Winston S Churchill.

This was an Amazon UK special recently, and I thought it would be interesting. A bit of a change from my usual mystery, fantasy or science fiction choices.

I bought this too, and it's definitely on my "must read" list. I'll be interested to hear your thoughts on it.

I read all of those just before I moved to the UK back in the 70's and they were excellent and made living in England all that much more interesting.

Enjoy!
