These were all foil matches. I didn't do nearly as well in epée. The Fencing Master beat me 5-3, and an Italian fellow named Marco beat me 5-4. I managed to win all my other epée bouts, but it was more reflex speed than thought-out skill. I've still go a ways to go before I'm ready for the Olympics...

Thanks. I can't begin to describe how it feels to know that the one sport that I have really loved since I was a young teenager, so passionately, so ardently, and yet thought I'd never get to play again, what with a gap of over 25 years, then to simply stumble onto a club in such a remote part of the world... and THEN to discover that I haven't completely lost it all and can still hold my own, even at my age, against all these young whippersnappers... There just aren't words enough to express what I felt when I walked out of the fencing salle today...

All I can really say is; Thank you, God!

Congrats on the fencing accomplishments, Stitchawl.

It occurs to me that MobileRead Security could use someone who's good with a sword. Our home office is always subject to invasion by disgruntled users, zombies, and land pirates, and one never knows when having someone skilled in one-on-one fighting skills could prove invaluable. The job doesn't pay anything, but you do get to view some of what goes on behind the scenes, such as our new project where we intercept and read emails from NSA employees to make sure the government isn't messing with the texts of our ebooks or posting spam at MobileRead. Some of those emails are really fun to read with their stories of steamy office romances and their railings against their bosses and coworkers. It's amazing how many people whose job involves top-level security are so careless in covering their own tracks.

I'll put in a good word for you.

For what it's worth, I can also knap flint spear points, arrow heads, and stone knives. When I realized that we were due for the next Ice Age (there has been one roughly every 10,000 years and we're already at 11,000 since the last one,) that if I was the only one on my block who could knap flint spear points, I'd be able to corner the market when the need to hunt mastodons, saber-toothed tigers, etc., arose.

Add to my resume that I was the Sergeant-at-Arms of the Hillside Riders horseback club at S.U.N.Y. in 1965, until I got kicked out of the school for bringing a girl into the dorm's TV room to watch "Hullabaloo." That might carry some weight too...

Just got back from seeing Twelve Years a Slave.

It was a difficult film to watch in places but, if not enjoyable in the conventional sense, it was very thought provoking. Probably more so for being based on a true story.

THAT is exactly the feeling this whole thing inspires...
It's as if there are no boundaries, no limits, nothing...
I was making a joke last month when I played the theme song from "Rocky," but... but... but... it's real!

And now there is another idea wiggling around my brain; Modern Pentathlon. I'm a fencer. Again. I've taught equestrian, so a 12-15 obstacle jumping course wouldn't present undue problems. I had to do a timed 500m swim to get my certification as Dive Master, and an even faster one for certification as Master Scuba Diver. 10m pistol shooting... I can keep all the shots in the black already. All I need to do is tighten the group into the 10-ring.

The only problem would be the 3k run... I've never been a long-distance runner. Ever. Even as a kid I was just a sprinter. Cross-country skiing gave me the endurance for 18k races, but I always finished near the end of the pack. In fact, for the last 18k race I was in, if I hadn't tripped the little old lady in front of me with my ski pole, I would have come in dead last. But I was still a cigarette smoker in those days... Who knows? This may be a new challenge for me. It's at least worth thinking about.

Congratulations Stitchawl. Might now go use that spark of inspiration to head down to my local squash courts and see if the last 5 years haven't taken too much from me

Happy Retirement WT Sharpe. Not much is going on around here at present. Just trying to keep warm with the cold temps we've been getting of late. Had my bedtime insulin meds and snack a little bit ago and have to check my blood sugar reading in a while and then I can get some rest. I had an early start to my day on Tuesday by waking up feeling off at 5:30 and finding that my blood sugar had dropped to 53 (70 is the low end of normal). Thankfully that doesn't happen very often. In fact I can't recall more than one other time when I woke to a low and that once was about a month after I was diagnosed with Diabetes. It was down to 45 that time.

struggling with not feeling sleepy. I had two cups of coffee at a meeting I went to earlier this evening (it's currently after midnight), as I damn near fell asleep on my way to it. the coffee has kicked in big time, the wine isn't counteracting it like I would like and I'm not stepping up to brandy.

other than that, I'm wondering where the hell everyone has been lately!?!?!?!?!?!?!
