Better a Fiat than a Vesper. Although once I had a Peugot.

For literally decades I thought that Fiat cars were named after the Latin 'fiat' ('Let there be cars'?) It was a nephew without a classical education who pointed out that it was an acronym for Fabbrica Italiana Automobili Torino (Italian Automobile Factory of Turin).

I learned to drive in a Fiat X19. I've also been to their factory, in Turin.

My dad had a Fiat, here up north. It was in 72. The car was not at all designed for winter use. It died (again my fixation on giving life to inanimate objects ) a horrible death by corrosion. The ordeal lasted almost two years at roughly 40thousand km. Even the steering wheel's heavy plastic envelope cracked at minus 40 one morning. Two years later, Fiat got out of Canada for good, never to come back. It's a shame because they make pretty decent cars nowadays... and cute! |

my dad had a peugeot 403 when i was a little kid, then he drove a renault 10 until just recently. after that he had an alfa romeo something or other. this is probably the origin of my preference for old cars. recent cars all look alike to me. except the twingo. and the smart car. i can always recognize the smart car.

i love the smart car too, but mainly because i have a fondness for any car that looks as if it you get it to go by pulling it backwards first to wind up the rubber band inside. that's why i like the twingo and the cinquecento (and the mini, obviously, but the ORIGINAL one, please) as well. i once took a photo where a smart car appears to be sitting in the palm of my hand (amazing what you can do when playing with perspective and depth of field). so yvan, would you get the original one, or the roadster ? |

BTW I've owned a mini Austin as a young adult, a really fun car for city driving. Since the kids are adults and gone, I look forward to going back to a miniature car, preferably electric. Have you seen the Heuliez EVs ? | |

There is an ad on my screen just below Yvan's last post offering a 1971 Fiat 2000 convertible for $610.00 on eBay Motors. The note next to it says "runs & drives"
