I've actually had this happen before - a couple of years ago I purchased a book which I couldn't download. Kobo offered me a refund back then but (why is no one going to be surprised about this?) then they "forgot" or something...
Anyway a week or so later the book was there so I gave up asking about my refund and I downloaded it. I assumed that they hadn't processed my refund because they fixed the book. Then a few weeks later of course my refund was processed. Because I am far too honest for my own good I actually attempted to explain to kobo that I needed to pay for the book as it had been fixed and I had downloaded it. You can imagine how successful that was! Eventually I gave up and figured I was owed a free book for all the problems I had experienced. This time I got the book from the library so it didn't cost me anything. As I like to reread I thought I would buy it next year sometime (when it was nice and cheap to start with and with a good coupon I might even get it cheaper than the $4 I paid) so right now I really don't care whether they refund me or not. I just wish they were a little better organised and there was someone in customer care who knew what was going on ... ![]() Edit: PS melmac I hope you can download it soon as I really enjoyed reading it! I may have stumbled across the reason for this issue...
Twice recently, I've bought books at Kobo and not gotten a download link. I was able to download samples from another retailer, and it seems that both books come from the publisher as EPUB 3.0, not 2.0. Could it be that Kobo is simply not providing download links for EPUB3 books that have DRM, either accidentally or on purpose? More to the point, can anyone add more data points to help clarify the hypothesis? |

strange, in the UK they seem to have different ISBN. The first one is 9780748113729 over here, but I could not find from other vendors which epub format they have, just "DRM epub". Would it be possible that they have different formats in different countries?

Sure it's possible. It makes economic sense to produce one EPUB, not multiple ones, unless there's some compelling reason to do otherwise. Granted, the UK/US punctuation difference might be such a reason, and a different publisher would almost certainly be.

More evidence for the theory...
While I was checking my library lists, I noticed that I'd recorded buying a US ebook version of an HMH title that I own in dead-tree. Since it wasn't on my backup drive, I went digging...and sure enough, I bought it from Kobo, there's no download button, and it turns out to be an EPUB3 book. It kind of smells like there's some kind of issue between the Kobo store, ADEPT copy protection, and EPUB3 as a format, as if the Kobo site can only deliver its own non-ADEPT variety of DRM on EPUB3 books. At least I can download and read the book with the Kobo app... |

My experience with buying a Kobo book and not being able to download it has been previously posted (mid September), but I'll add here some other aspects.
The book: The Modern Web Peter Gasston ISBN:9781593274887 No Starch Press Kobo shows the book available for the following devices: Desktop eReaders Android iOS Tablets No Starch Press list the book as having the following formats: Mobi Epub - no version specified Also (same IBN) sold by B&N - epub format, but no version stated. My situation was that the book showed in My Library, but there wasn't a download option. It was in my Kobo Desktop and so I was able to extract it from that put it through Calibre. This book was a DRM free book also sold by O'Reilly's. Kobo Customer Care couldn't explain why it wasn't available as a download, and basically couldn't care because they said I should just be happy that it was in my Desktop. I don't use Desktop, and never buy a book unless it can be downloaded and put into Calibre. I didn't get a refund, just a store credit. |

I've grabbed the sample from B&N, since it can't be downloaded at Kobo. I'll check the OPF tomorrow to see whether or not this is an EPUB3 (as I suspect it is).

At this point, I'm ready to make the call: EPUB3 books mean no Kobo download button, which I consider a major bug. Does anyone else have any counter-evidence to knock down the theory? For those who don't know what they're looking for, the *.opf file in the EPUB starts with a <package> tag, which has a "version" attribute that indicates the version of the EPUB. Most ebooks are EPUB 2.0, and those are behaving fine; the problem children are the ones that say version="3.0" instead. |

But how can you call it a major bug when the defacto tool for DRM support and ePub handling is ADE and ADE does not handle ePub 3?

When the website doesn't say a word about the situation, that's a major bug. A customer has the right to know how their purchase will be available.

Saying I can read the books I buy on any ePub capable device I choose then ONLY allowing me to read it on my Kobo device rather than transferring it to a Nook or Sony or whatever via ADE is is a major bug as far as I am concerned. I do read the majority of books I read on my Kobo, but I also like to have a backup in case I wake up one day like I did last year and the 187 ePub books I had purchased from Books on Board were inaccessible with no recourse. If I had not been downloading them as I bought them to ADE they'd just have been gone. I'm not saying Kobo's going to disappear into the night, but I didn't think Books on Board or Borders was going anywhere either! And not showing us the format of the book we are paying for BEFORE we buy is wrong, wrong, wrong. If they'd put that info back on the website like it was people would know they were buying a book they couldn't download!

The publisher decides whether the books Kobo sells have DRM or not. Tor books I have bought from Kobo are all DRM-free, both the epub versions downloaded from the website and the kepub version downloaded via my Kobo device.
