Haven't been to the doctor - not much to do for a viral infection - that gets passed around at work - I have a Z-Pack in readiness if it morphs into a bacterial infection. Being exposed over & over at work just re-infects me every time I start to feel better. Today my sore throat & fever returned. I stay in my office as much as possible - listening to all the others coughing their lungs out and spewing infectious droplets into the air.

More ice water [nary touching a drop of Laphroaig] today and much sleep. Of course some medicinal Laphroaig too!

A Z Pack is a concentrated anti-biotics pack. You take it for five days instead of ten. It is meant to whallop whatever you have hard.

Quite right Prof - the original antibiotic in it was Zithromycin - hence the nickname. People panic and take them too soon - it only works on bacterial infections, not viral infections.

More ice water for me today.

It is big in the US. Very big. Probably too big. There is a huge issue with over-prescribing anti-biotics.

I love my Doctor. She is very clear about her desire to not prescribe anything unless it will actually do something. Since most cough type things are viral, there is no reason to prescribe a medicine. I need to keep on top of the viral stuff though because I am more prone to viral becoming bacterial, which is what happened last winter. And that is not something I ever want to set in motion again.

So I take the flonase and singular to keep tight check of allergies and dry up my nose to stop the nasal drip which is more prone to cause asthma attacks and bacterial crap. So we are on the same page medicine wise. Which is nice. And I trust her when she says "Sorry, it feels awful but this won't work and here is why"

Which is a long way of saying, I have taken a Z pack once and my Doctor would never give me on to decide when to take it on my own. The LM has been on antibiotics for three whole days in his young life, which is a minor miracle because kids are given anti biotics for sneezing in the US. We would rather pay the co-pay and back and see her if things don't improve then take medicines that are more likely then not doing us no good.

But we are stange.

There's a similar problem here in the UK as well. Too many people ask their doctor for antibiotics when they have something that antibiotics won't help, and too many doctors prescribe them unnecessarily. Your doctor and your own attitude sound the right ones to me.

We're always told that you must complete a course of antibiotics if prescribed and that you mustn't save them and self medicate in the future. It seems common sense, but I know people (including family members) who do keep hold of untaken antibiotics and prescribe them to themselves!

A colleague at work brought some Kenyan instant coffee back from a trip there. I'm trying a cup of that - it's not bad.

Having my first tea of the day. I'm taking a class for the next few weeks and Wednesday starts (too) early for me for the duration.

Whatever bacteria live in my sinuses eat Z-packs like after-dinner mints. When I get a sinus infection I go straight to the big stuff.

My second round of pnuemonia last year got the big stuff. The first bout got the Z pack. It looked like that had cleared it, but it hadn't.

Glass of Bombay Sapphire before bed...

All this talk of anti-biotic regulations makes me wonder...
In most Asian Third-World countries, we can purchase antibiotics over the counter without a prescription. Yet there seems to be less of a problem with drug-resistant bacteria here than in the US. Obviously Malaria is one disease that has morphed into various resistant strains, but so far none of the other tropicals have gone that route to the same degree that things such as strep, staph, tuberculosis have followed. Of course, in the tropics, we get far more parasitic infestations, but those too get treated with drugs that are sold over the counter here, rather than by prescription.
Makes me wonder...

One of the worst problems with self-medicating antibiotics is that people rarely finish a full and complete dose of them. Which just makes the tendency towards multiple resistant strains worse. Look at what has happened with TB.

Stitch, how affordable are those medicines for the local population? There is affordable for expats and affordable for the local population. It could also be that the locals simply don't turn to medicine the way we do and so they don't bother using it.

Thailand wants to attract Westeners to their hospitals and the like by providing great services for a cheap price.

All I know is when I was in Egypt we were told that we should only tip the entire cruise ship staff $5 and that would cover everyone. I thought that was silly and tipped more then that for the folks who took care of the room, table, and the concierge. I think it worked out to $20 total. Hardly anything for me but a good chunk of change for the people on that ship.
