How to handle end of chapter notations
Just reading an ebook that has loads of annotations throughout the chapter, but the notes are at the end of the chapter.
How do you guys handle them as it seems clumsy to go to the end of each chapter and bookmark it and then to have to bookmark the page I'm on etc. Thanks, Steve Last edited by Chocky; 01-05-2014 at 10:59 AM. |

If you don't have links to endnotes, then it is a badly formatted book, and a pain! |

Nope, no link, it's an epub not kepub.

I wonder whether you could try and use Joel's Calibre plugin to turn it into an epub.kepub - yet if the notes are not there to begin with, I don't think they will be added. I "kepubify" all of my books, but for non fiction the books I have read recently had links to endnotes in the epub version to begin with, so I suspect it is an issue with the book itself, they should have put links to the endnotes to begin with. If they have not, maybe you could ask for a refund? What book is it, if you don't mind sharing this info? Sometimes different vendors offer different editions (it happened at least once to me, an ibook that was good, while the epub bought elsewhere was rubbish, with no links to endnotes).

"Snuff" by Terry Pratchett, bought from Amazon but side loaded with Calibre.

It seems strange that there are chapter notes and no links to them from the text. Can you open it with Kindle for PC or some other reader to check that they aren't there? I just tried the sample and I can see some links in the text to the footnotes. For example, I can see "3" after the sentence ending with "place back in the city." And "4" after "This offended Vimes to his shakily egalitarian core." The numbers are tiny and hard to see in Kindle for PC.
If they are there, it might be a problem with the conversion to epub. You can check the epub in the calibre viewer to see if it has them. Or using edit-books to check the code. When this is sorted out, paola's suggestion to use the extended driver is a good one. The handling of footnotes in kepubs is much better than with epubs. If you don't want to stick to epubs, but try a lepubd for this, you can use the Kepub Output plugin to convert to kepub. The standard KoboTouch driver can send this to the device. |

Generally links to footnotes are quite faint (in a different and lighter shade of gray in the text), but after a while it is easy to get the knack of it. |

The links are very hard to hit in the ePub Pratchett books on a Kobo, I either read them on a Nook (Probably not an option here) or add .kepub to the end of the file and sideload (For some reason the links are a lot easier to hit in the kepub renderer).

The recent firmware seems to have improved the ability to get the links. And it seems to be even better for kepubs. I have just read the kepub version of "World War Z" and had no problems with its links. I also tried the epub version which worked almost as well.

I can get them to work on the Kindle for PC.
I'll try the kepub. |

What do these annotations look like in the book's markup?

Well,
It's all to do with font size, just tried changing it to a really large font, and lo and behold, touching the annotation takes me to the end of the chapter where the annotation is. I read with quite a small font and have now tried being very careful, and I manage to get the annotation to work about 1 in 4, (the other 3 ending up in page turns). So, sorry about messing everybody about, but one more question. How do I return to the page I am reading from the annotation at the end of the chapter? Thanks, Steve |

Bottom left of the screen should have a "back to previous location" button (might need to tap the bottom of the screen to bring up the bottom menu to get to it, I can't remember exactly).

Also, this is a reason to try kepubs. In the current firmware, when you tap the footnote, it is displayed in a popup window. The window has a close/cancel button and a "See more". The "See more" button takes you to the full note. But, in most cases you don't need to do that. |
