Since it's winter and another winter storm is rolling through town and the temperature is going to plumet yet again this weekend, what is the coldest temperature directly recorded on Earth? Where was it recorded?

For those scoring at home, the forecast low on Saturday night here is -35C.

For where I would have to guess Antarctica. Lowest temperature maybe -50 C?

Too warm. Half a point for where, but not quite specific enough for a full point.

Oddly enough -50C is the coldest temperature ever recorded where I live.

I think I've seen reports of temperatures in the -80s recently (in natural dips in the landscape, recorded recently)?

Not only do I probably live closer to this place than most of us, the Mr and I were talking abut this just yesterday! Close to -90, as I recall, and at the Russian research station in Princess Elizabeth Land.

There is the 'Rule of 60' that most mountaineers are constantly made aware of.
"At -60° exposed skin freezes in 60 seconds."

Remember seeing all those old movies of the Eskimos with big mittens with a string tied to them around their necks? That's so that they never put them down when they have to take them off for a few seconds to do something. Take 'em off, do what needs be done, and get 'em back on quickly!

That's close enough. -89.2C at the Vostok(sp) station in Antarctica.

And yes dry ice stays frozen.

Kiwi scientist Ernest Rutherford died in 1937, of a hernia. There's a non-medical reason for why a relatively minor condition killed a fairly healthy 66-year-old man. What is that reason?
