If Baen sells a bundle containing (let's say) seven books for $18, then each book would cost $2.57. If you already have three of them, you'd pay $10.28, and obtain four new books in your library.

Or, if they wouldn't want to do this, have you pay $18, and giving you four books and $7.72 credit, which you could spend on other books; or stack up the credit, and buy one of the next bundles with it.

Oh my...I've fallen off the wagon again. I bought the rest of the Wheel of Time books I didn't have(8 books). Well, I had extra money from Christmas, and they are on sale at Diesel, so I figured why not. It's worth it to have them all on my reader, since it's my favourite series. I just never got to the last 3 books yet, but now I can! I will be starting the re-read after I finish the book I'm currently reading.

Of course, what helps is to stop surfing for 'deals' on books. I have made no purchases yet this year. I've obtained 3 free things since the 1st including a free unabridged audio of Crimes and Punishment. I remember reading that one in college - it was a good story, but depressing, so not something I'm going to listen to in Wintertime when it's dull and dreary.

I've tried focusing on reading/listening to only a couple of things, but it's hard since I have so many devices. I've been listening to Terminal Freeze on my Itouch and Unnatural Acts on my Nano. Then I have Philly Stakes on the Nook and Cannery Row on the Kindle. There is no hope for me. Oh.. oh.. and I also have an Asimov SF magazine on the other Kindle. So, that's FIVE simultaneously. However, today is looking good for finishing Philly Stakes and Terminal Freeze will likely be done by tomorrow. So, I can try again.

As far as Baen books, I already have the February Bundle. I'll probably get the March one as well since 3 of the books are from an author that I've never read. That's why I get the bundles in the first place - cheap way to try new authors.

As a motivation to keep myself on the right track, I made the effort today of adding all my 2010 and 2011 ebook purchases to my 2012-2013 spreadsheet as well.

Now it looks even worse, and seeing the sum total of well over $3200 spent on ebooks over four years is enough to keep me on the straight and narrow this year, I hope.

I'm hoping that the temptation of hovering over that Buy Now button for books I don't really want but make me think "oh, but maybe it's something interesting, and it's not that expensive, and I could just get it anyway" will lessen, the longer I manage to hold out. I'm not going to feel bad over the ones I know I will buy (and read right away), but I'd really like to stop just spending randomly on books I'll likely never actually get around to.

This is where just bunging them on your Amazon wish list helps.

Ignoring my subscriptions and the Baen bundle, I've only bought 2 ebooks so far this year:

Escape to Other Worlds by Jo Walton (£0.37 with a Kobo coupon)
Raising Steam by Terry Pratchett (£0.99 Amazon special offer)

Of course, we're only four days into the new year. And if we count subscriptions and the Baen Bundle, I've already spent $27.55 of my $40 budget for this month.

I suspect things may get tricky towards the end of January.

But both my purchases are from favourite authors at excellent discounts.

Well, I'd only bought one book until I just this minute found out about the Pratchett offer.

Actually, one book every three days would be fine for my target, and it is the 4th today.

Three now. Life After Life was also £0.99 at Amazon UK, and got high recommendations from poohbear_nc and BelleZora as well as being Time Magazine's best fiction book of 2013. It also sounded like something I'd really enjoy.

$29.04/$40 spent now….

I saw the Life after Life and The Goldfinch deals, and have been really tempted .. $1.63 each. On the other hand, do I actually want to read them? I keep asking myself that, and the answer is "well, if I'm quite honest, not really..."

So I'm resisting. For now.

Quite right!

I, on the other hand, really like interesting alternate life/time travel/groundhog day type scenarios, so it's moved to the top of my TBR pile.

It does sound interesting. Sort of. Hence my wibbling, especially as I genuinely do want to try and branch out occasionally, and books that sound at least mildly interesting + have had an excellent critical reception sound like a good place to start....

Sigh. It's very difficult to resist - or to even be decisive, sometimes.

My plan to reduce my TBR before allowing myself to acquire new books hit a snag today with two 99p books at Amazon: Raising Steam and The Ocean at the End of the Lane. Thing is one of my on-going goals is to catch-up with the Discworld series so I will read RS at some point so not taking the saving seems daft. The Gaiman book I have no excuse, I know I'll enjoy it but who knows when I'll get to read it.

I forgive you. If I hadn't already bought it back in October (for $1.59) I'd also be buying it today. It's an excellent book by a very good author.

My stats so far this year are read 4, bought 9...

I succumbed and bought Life After Life. It does sound like something I might actually read, and at that price...

At least it's only the first book bought this year, so I am still doing pretty well.

Ocean at the End of the Lane, too? Dammit. This thread has cost me two books today.
