Worse than having to rebuy an ebook is if it is no longer available as an ebook. I've bought a few books from Amazon like the second volume of the Belgarian omnibus by Eddings that has since become unavailable. Insurance wouldn't help with this. Better to clean up the books with Alf's help and make your own backups.

Out of print paper books can often be found online these days, but not so 30 years ago. And it is becoming increasingly easier to find ebook versions of backlist or obscure titles than paper. I'm not saying don't De-DRM or backup, in fact if keeping books to reread is important to you than you should. I am saying that it is far easier to keep these books than it ever was with paper, and without DRM publishers would be selling far less ebooks and libraries would not have many ebooks that are still under copyright protection. This is by no means certain. Indeed, I'd suggest that what evidence there is points in the other direction.
Tor went DRM free in the middle of 2012. Tor has stated that they have seen no increase in piracy from going DRM-free. What is certain is that without DRM, publishers would be making $0.22 extra on each ePub ebook they sold. |

Are you sure that fee is passed on to the publisher by sellers that use Adobe's DRM? I wouldn't be surprised if publishers make the retailers absorb that cost.

It doesn't really matter who 'pays' the cost, the effect is the same. By using Adobe DRM, $0.22 from each ebook sale is going to Adobe instead of to the Retailer, Publisher or Author. |

As long as Alf exists I don't worry. If Alf goes away or they find a way that Alf can't break, then I will seriously consider pirating. I refuse to allow these publisher to hold my books hostage. If they want full price then I want the right to put my books on any/all machines capable of reading ebooks.

Waaaayyyyyy back in the day, when Amazon was new (I know, I am old), I bought some ebooks on Amazon. Mind you, this is before portable devices other than bulky laptops, but I fancied myself to be on the cutting edge, and this Ebook thing called to me, but I digress.... Anyway, a couple of years later, Amazon bought Mobi, started selling books in Mobi format later and decided to create their own format, which they based on Mobi. In their infinite wisdom they decided to retire their previous (leased) format. Guess what happened to my books, in that previous format? Poof, gone! Looking at my Amazon purchase history nowadays, I can't even find said books. No, my friends, I will happily buy DRM books only as long as I can remove that crap post haste. I've been burned by Amazon, Fictionwise and Barnes and Noble. Caveat emptor. Art |
