Sorry, I think I was the one who started this, having the whine. I wondered why it was charging me in HKD through Paypal. Yes, it works out roughly the same as the NZD one, but I just wanted to make sure that there wasn't anything dodgy going on.

I decided to try 'moving' to another country to take advantage of the various promo codes. I used a different email address and set up my profile to 'standard checkout'. I have tried UK, India, US and Mexico and made sure to use a non-agency title which I verified as eligible by requesting only eligible titles. The only country that had the promo code option was Mexico. The other three had the gift card option available but not the promo code. I've cleared cookies and tried both Firefox and IE10 (got the message that Kobo could not be loaded when I tried IE9). Any suggestions for troubleshooting?

Many thanks to all who have posted codes here over the past few months during which I have taken the time to follow this thread, as I have ended up with some good buys as a result of them. They have also served to introduce me to the Kobo store which previously (like this thread), not having a Kobo device, I had never considered visiting.

@Crumpet, as far as I am concerned your single comment on the matter, made just as an aside, does not constitute a "whine" .

I'm sorry I don't understand. With what do you need troubleshooting? In Mexico all books are coupon eligible but not all codes work with the old style checkout. You may need to change country while in the payment area for 85off and 75off to be accepted.

Mexico is not a problem as the option to use a promo code appears at checkout. However, there are discountable books I want that are only available in the US, UK or India. The problem is that when I try to purchase at those locations, the option to use a promo code does not appear although the option for a gift card does. @msjo I find it very curious that the the 'Have a Promo Code' dialogue box doesn't show up on the India checkout page.

I hope you don't mind but I have a question for you:

On the India page have you got your credit card or paypal details already entered?

Thanks for clarifying. If the promo entry box doesn't appear, then Kobo is not allowing promo discounts for those titles. Each country has different publishers that Kobo allows or disallows. So what may work in one country may not in another. As I said Mexico (and similar countries) have no restrictions. If the title is not available in Mexico, then try Commonwealth countries; South Africa, Australia, New Zealand. Members here have used Hong Kong also.

India is on the new look Kobo home page and new look checkout.

Fbone I suspect that India does not have publisher restrictions, and that all books are discountable.

I may be quite wrong - but I've yet to find a book on the India site that isn't discountable - but hey - I haven't really checked out too many ....

It could also be the particular promo code. I changed my country to India and selected a HarperCollins title. The old checkout appears but 3 active US codes did not work in India; 50dec did, however. But that doesn't explain msjo's complaint of missing promo box. It works for me. What I do is change countries in payment screen where I had already selected paypal and entered code.

I suspect that msjo's missing the payment box because they're on the 'old look' checkout. Because as we know the new look check out shows that box irrespective of whether the book can be discounted or not.

One of the pitfalls of being say in the US site and selecting the book to the checkout stage - and then changing the country code is that you'll only get pricing on that published version of the book - and not other versions of the book that India stocks.

That's why I change my country code, and then close the site and then open kobobooks.com afresh - already logged into the India (or wherever site).

It seems to work everytime doing it that way.

Yes, you will miss other versions my way but I must pay with Paypal. And India doesn't have Paypal option with India's new checkout screen. So I start with Mexico/Aus/UK that allows Paypal then switch over.
