It's track tag wrong or shuffle is on. I think it's tagged wrong.

I had this problem with non-DRM Tantor audiobooks a couple of times. With me it seems to have been a Windows Media Player problem with the tags because I started using another player to transfer files to the Clip Plus and never had the issue again.

That did it. Thank you. I just used Window's Explorer to drag and drop rather than the Overdrive Program. The two books I was currently having a problem with now work perfectly! So very strange.

change the names of the tracks and reload. use two digits for the first nine at the beginning of the track name: 01, 02, etc.

Otherwise, it sorts 1, 10, 11...., 2, 20, 21...

which is a pain.

You are correct, and this is still the case. Not an issue for me, but could be a showstopper if you have such files. Rockbox does have a dual-boot facility - hold down the right button as you turn it on and it will run the original firmware - but it is a little awkward.

Thank you for your reply. I had tried that, but when I saved the file, it reverted to single digits. I have no idea why. But Keslynn's idea worked fine.

For renaming files I use http://www.mp3tag.de/en/index.html. It will also do track numbers. It's free, and I love it!

I personally love TagScanner. Been using it for years and iirc they have a portable version. Works on many formats, can search some web sources for info and lets you embed cover art.

Are you by chance using iTunes on a PC? If so I have had a problem in the past that if I re-name a file or change its location iTunes will "fix" it for me and put it back to what it was! The only way around this for me was to remove the file from iTunes, rename/move it, then add it back.

Of course, why would I ever do that? Apple knew best that's why they fixed my mistake...

Just in case you gave a Target Gift Card for Christmas you might want to read this!

Just to add a update on my case. I got a letter from my bank that our account was compromised but they caught the transaction and it was declined before they could take our money. Our bank knew we couldn't be in TN and in another state at the same time so thank goodness they are watching out for us. We will be getting a new card soon.
