This has just happened to me. Been away for two days and didn't take my Aura with me. The pin hole reset is unresponsive and I've tried the other methods suggested. Any other ideas?

Mine is the new Aura not the HD. I was already on 3.1.1 so it can't be a software update |

I do love my Aura but I do wish the software wasn't so flaky.

This has also happened to me. I picked up my Kobo Aura reader to wake from sleep and the screen froze half refreshed. Nothing would reset the device. I ended up returning the device to Kobo for service and they sent me a new one. This was back in December with my first reader. Now, the same thing has happened again with a new device. The screen froze mid screen refresh and I'll be returning the new device for service. The only commonality between the two devices is that I charged each once and the problem occurred after about two months of us. I've attached a picture of the problem and a link to a short youtube video.

That's typically a cracked substrate, but if they replaced the last one you either got lucky or something else happened. Hard to tell from your current picture whether it's cracked or not (typically curved or angled lines). That typically could happen from twisting of the device or a point pressure on the screen breaking the substrate. Do you carry the device around in a bag or purse? Having it in a case (unless it really hard and doesn't flex) won't necessarily protect it from twisting.

What robko said, DrOptiks - your photo is tiny/angled and your video is showing up very pixelated with a lot of glare for me, so it's hard to tell; but by far the most likely explanation for that appearance is a broken glass substrate. A clear, large, straight-on photo of the screen will likely clear up the question.

A better picture would let us know for sure, but it doesn't seem like a broken screen to me. The lines are vertical with only the sleeping details in a horizontal box.

Thank you for all the replies. Sorry about the small photo and I don't have the unit anymore so you'd have to watch the video for a closer look. I did record it in 1080HD but yes, there is glare.

I remember that there weren't any angled lines or the sort. I do carry my reader around with me in my jacket pocket so I can read on the bus or when I get a moment. I think it was a software glitch myself as I couldn't access any files when plugged into the computer. I have a soft case, however if these units are so fragile you can't even carry them around with you that defeats the purpose of them replacing books. My old Kobo Touch has survived a (now-) eleven-year-old for nearly a year and a half now, in a good hard case, including going back and forth to school. |

Only time I damaged one of my readers screen it was in a soft sleeve. I carry my mini bare and Kobo Touch in good cover that gives better protection. I am always aware of how delicate they are and careful not to drop or otherwise damage them.
