I'd personally like to see the first edition of the Oxford Classical Dictionary. Max Cary died in 1958 so in death+50 countries it should be public domain on 1st January.

It's a tad shorter than the current 3rd edition, 971 pages compared to 1700, but it's sufficient for most cases.

He was the editor of it, rather than the author, I believe. I don't know how copyright laws work with something like that, where different articles were written by different people - do you?

This part of Canadian law seems to cover this situation.

Canadian Copyright Act ( R.S., 1985, c. C-42 )

6.2 Where the identity of all the authors of a work of joint authorship is unknown, copyright in the work shall subsist for whichever of the following terms ends earlier:

(a) a term consisting of the remainder of the calendar year of the first publication of the work and a period of fifty years following the end of that calendar year, and

(b) a term consisting of the remainder of the calendar year of the making of the work and a period of seventy-five years following the end of that calendar year,

but where, during that term, the identity of one or more of the authors becomes commonly known, copyright shall subsist for the life of whichever of those authors dies last, the remainder of the calendar year in which that author dies, and a period of fifty years following the end of that calendar year.

The book is listed as edited by Max Cary et al.Therefore I would read it as the copyright lasting death + 50 from when Max Cary died in 1958. This would make it become public domain on 1st January 2009.

However, i'm not a Canadian copyright lawyer so i could be mistaken...

But are the authors unknown? I have the third edition, and certainly in that, all the contributors are listed at the front of the book. Are they not listed in the 1st edition?

I dunno about all this, but I do know that US customers who buy from ebooks.com have to pay an international transaction charge on their credit cards. Bummer.

I am trying to find The Carved Lions by Mary Louisa Stewart (aka Mrs. Molesworth). They don't have it on PG, otherwise I would do it myself.

One question, can we upload Manybooks titles here? I had just started working on Peterkin by Mrs. Molesworth when I saw they already had it there.

I was thinking of creating an e-book version of "Vie privée et publique des animaux", with illustrations by J.J. Grandville. The book is available in Gallica (http://gallica.bnf.fr/Catalogue/noti...NF38926363.htm), but unfortunatelly only as scanned pages in PDF or TIFF format. I guess I can extract the illustrations from the scans, but copying the text is like too much for me. Would anyone help me extract the text with an OCR program (which I don't have)? I could then proofread it, add the illustrations, and create the formated e-book... PM me if you're interested (or if you know anywhere else I can get the text from).

Just to say that I've decided to just retype the whole text (+600 pages). It's not so hard as it seemed at first, I have around 30% done already.

Ah yes Madam. But this stated in so concise a version may be leading to misunderstandings.

What Madam does, like some of us do, me included, is take a manybook text, reformat it, add a toc and a cover and then convert it to the ebook formats we do have on MR.

So the answer really is: Please do not take a book from Manybooks and upload it without any ameliorations. That is just wasting time and bandwidth. If you can't add at least a little plus, just leave it on Manybooks.
