Paperwhite new user questions

My wife has been using the old Kindle with keyboard since it first came out.

Several things, we are from Canada but spend winters in USA and we sideload all her books so don't care whether we connect to amazon store or not. I have an Amazon US account while she has a Canadian account. This kindle was purchased from my US account.

Questions:

Does it have to be registered and if so can she simply just sign up with her Canadian account? Knowing Amazon they probably registered it to me so if that is so I assume I just deregister it, then does it have to be registered to work. IE: if I connect to a PC to sideload books with Calibre will it bug ne to register.

Doesn't come with a wall charger. Is it safe to simply use the wall charger from the older kindle.

Any other hints from users will be appreciated.

It's a good idea to register. There are some features (eg collections) which won't work without registration. Just deregister, then reregister to the Canadian account.

Any USB wall charger will work fine.

The Kindle actually walks you through changing registration as soon as you connect to wifi.

Biggest problem I had was getting my wife to remember her password

In the real world one of the hats I wear is a computer security officer's cap and my pals in the industry have told me that they recommend that people use their cell phones and/or smart phones to record your user names and passwords to various web sites. Most of us have so many user names and passwords out there on the internet that there is no way we can recall them all. I have had a lot less password errors since Istarted entering them in to my employer provided blackberry. I use the phone book app to record the user names and passwords where the name of the site is the first and last name, Itypically put the password in the notes section of the phone book entry. Since I started doing that I have gotten a few wrong, but far less then I have before I did that. This way I have only one to recall not thousands, and that's the password into the berry. Iwould recommend that method for Mrs Goldberry.

Another newbie question for the pw2: when you use the power button at the bottom to power off, is the pw2 really all the way off? Including wifi and anything else that would use power?

I believe WiFi stays on when you close the cover unless you first place your unit into airplane mode.

Many times firmware is upgraded and syncing is done from the cover closed mode if WiFi is left on.

However, a full power down using the switch should shut down everything.

what do you mean by "close the cover"? Are you referring to an add-on kindle cover?

I'm hoping a power down with the power button really does shut it all down. I'm going to see how long my battery lasts while leaving wifi on.

A short slide puts it into sleep mode, a long hold on the slide turns it completely off. I have had kindles for several years, I read @5-8 hours a day and I have never turned mine completely off. My battery charge lasts several weeks, but like I said I use mine everyday so my charge probably does not last as long as some others do.

I have a quick question as I'm contemplating a Paperwhite Wifi purchase - when you have to register it through the wifi, does it automatically push a newer firmware version onto the Kindle? Or can I choose not to do that? That is my main complaint with the Kobo, some of the updates are horrible, and I would prefer not to have to automatically install the latest version if I have to restore to the hardwired firmware.

I'm assuming I can't just open the box, sideload my ebooks (which is what I would always do) and start reading. They force you to register to use collections (as I read above), which I have no problem doing I just don't want to have the latest firmware upgrade.

No, you can't choose whether or not to receive a firmware update, but you aren't going to get a firmware updates in the brief time the Wi-Fi is on to register the device.

Exactly. I only turn on my wi-fi once a month, to grab my Prime library loan.

The 2 things that are preventing me from clicking on the "checkout cart" for the Paperwhite right now are: 1) trying to decide if I can really live with a finite number of books on the Kindle (I think I can, particularly if the AZW3s are smaller than mobis) and 2) can I use my Scosche 5V USB charger with the Kindle? There seems to be some question as to whether I need to spend $15 CDN for a Kindle charger from Amazon or I can use this.

I often use a charger that went with an old cell phone. You don't need the Kindle specific charger.
