Spilled Blood

It's every parent's worst nightmare. Chris Hawk's daughter has been accused of murder . . . and she looks guilty as sin.

Chris rushes to the small town in Minnesota where his ex-wife and his only child, Olivia, now live, determined to defend his daughter. He discovers two towns at war: Barron, where a chemical works has brought jobs and fortune, and St Croix, Olivia's downriver home, where the same chemical works are believed to have brought death: a cancer cluster with mysterious origins.

Olivia is at the centre of this feud. So is the girl she's suspected of killing. If Chris is to find out what really happened, he needs to learn everything about his daughter… but he's beginning to realise he hardly knows her at all. Chris wants to believe Olivia is innocent, but belief is only the first step. Now he has to prove it. And all the while, the Barron boys are waiting, baying for her blood.

Thanks again Mort1997! I've read the first three, already got no.4 in the series and have now got the complete set, brilliant! DS McRae and his fellow Aberdeen polis can be a bit mouthy and OTT, but I love the humour of these books.

Silencing Eve by Iris Johansen is $0.97 at Diesel. ($10.99 at Amazon US)
Quote:
#1 New York Times bestselling author Iris Johansen is back with the shocking conclusion to the latest Eve Duncan trilogy.
This is the finale that fans have been waiting for. In Taking Even, the game began. In Hunting Eve, the chase was on. Now, in Silencing Eve, the prey is cornered. Will Eve Duncan survive? Will those she loves take the fall with her? And will the secrets of Eve’s past ultimately become her undoing? In Silencing Eve, all the questions will be answered in a shocking, you never saw it coming conclusion.

Iris Johansen’s 2012 trilogy, Eve, Quinn, Bonnie was a phenomenal success, reaching number one on bestseller lists nationwide. Now, with this newest trilogy, the stakes are even higher because it’s a question of capture and escape, hunter and prey, life and death.

Free Today on Amazon - The Eve of Murder by James Whitworth

The Yorkshire coastal town of Whitby is getting ready for the literary festival that is going to put it back on the cultural map.
But as the opening day draws near, the body of Georgina Callan, the festival’s organizer, is found dead on West Cliff - at exactly the same spot where her father threw himself to his death many years before.
Except her death was no suicide. She has been strangled.
An elderly dog walker reveals that he has seen her at the Cliff almost every night for the last year. She always has company, yet her male companion is not her husband.
Was her death an isolated attack? Or is there a serial killer at large in the town?
Meanwhile, Don Watson, the famous writer and literary figure , is coming to Whitby to speak at the festival. He needs police protection because he has been receiving death threats.
Detective Inspector Frank Miller has a big job on his hands: solve the murder before the festival starts and keep Don Watson safe.
Can Miller stop another killing.
Or is this 'The Eve of Murder'?

The Paris Lawyer

$4.95 and discountable (bookriot50 works if you can't get a bigger one from the discounts thread)

Quote:
Winner of the Grand Prix Sang d’Encre crime fiction award in 2011, for the first time in English.

“A beautifully written and elegantly structured novel of a woman's attempt to solve the central mystery of her life, along with several other mysteries along the way. It captures the reader from the first page, and never lets go.”
— Thomas H. Cook, winner of the Martin Beck Award, Barry Award for Best Novel, Edgar Award for Best Novel

As a child, Catherine Monsigny was the only witness to a heinous crime. Now, she is an ambitious rookie attorney in sophisticated modern-day Paris. On the side, she does pro bono work and hits the jackpot: a major felony case that could boost her career. A black woman is accused of poisoning her rich farmer husband in a peaceful village in central France, where the beautiful, rolling hills hold dark secrets. While preparing the case, Catherine’s own past comes back with a vengeance. This fast- paced story follows Catherine’s determined search for the truth in both her case and her own life. Who can she believe? And can you ever escape from your past? The story twists and turns, combining subtle psychological insight with a detailed sense of place.

"This is a complex tale, skillfully told, that will keep you in suspense to the very end.”
— Patricia MacDonald, Edgar-award nominee

“Full of surprises and twists that will keep you reading late into the night.”
–Cosmopolitan

“This is a suspense novel with an absolutely perfect atmosphere. The writing is subtle, racy, controlled. It is written with great art!”
— RTL.be

“Everything in this book—the plot, the atmosphere, the characters, and the style—is perfectly mastered from beginning to end.”
— L’Echo

Treachery in Bordeaux
$4.95 and discountable (bookriot50 works if you can't get a bigger one from the discounts thread)

Quote:
The series is being adapted to television in France. This first book aired in February 2012 as Mission à Pessac.

Benjamin Cooker is a renowned winemaker and critic turned gentleman detective who sets out to find who is trying to take down the prestigious grand cru Moniales Haut-Brion. Is it negligence or sabotage? Who would want to target this esteemed vintner? Cooker and his assistant Virgile Lanssien search the city and the vineyards for answers, giving readers and inside view of this famous wine region. Treachery in Bordeaux is the first of the 20-book Winemaker Detective series that delves into the underworld of a global luxury industry.

"Treachery in Bordeaux is a fine vintage forged by the pens of two very different varietals. It is best consumed slightly chilled, and never alone. You will be intrigued by its mystery, and surprised by its finish, and it will stay with you for a very long time." — Peter May, Prize-winning, international bestselling author

“An excellent mystery series in which you eat, drink and discuss wine as much as you do murders.” — Bernard Frank, Le Nouvel Observateur

“Benjamin Cooker uses his composure, erudition and intuition to solve heady crimes that take place in the exclusive—and realistic—world of grand cru wines.” — Jean-Claude Raspiengeas, La Croix

“This is an excellent translation. You never have the feeling you are reading a translated text. The author obviously knows Bordeaux extremely well, and he knows quite a bit about oenology. The book should be a hit with lovers of Bordeaux wine." — Tom Fiorini, The Vine Route
"I love good mysteries. I love good wine. So imagine my joy at finding a great mystery about wine, and winemaking, and the whole culture of that fascinating world. And then I find it's the first of a series. I can see myself enjoying many a bottle of wine while enjoying the adventures of Benjamin Cooker in this terrific new series." — William Martin, New York Times bestselling author of Back Bay and The Lincoln Letter

Hmm, I like the look of that. Only a couple of negative reviews (had to laugh at "it read as though it had been translated from another language"!) and £1.39 isn't much of a risk to try on a new author....

I really need to stop looking at this thread, getting through my Amazon vouchers far too quickly!

Since posting this Kobo has decided that the book isn't available in Aus until May 29 2014 at $8.99.

Anyway, I bought mine when it was available in Aus for $4.95 minus whatever discount code I used and paid $1.73 for it.

Seems Kobo's a bit unsure about what's available where and what's not, eh.

The 7th Woman
$4.95 and discountable (bookriot50 works if you can't get a higher code from the discounts thread)

Quote:
Frédérique Molay is the French Michael Connelly – Jean Miot, former head of Agence France Presse (AFP).

Winner of France's prestigious Prix du Quai des Orfèvres prize for best crime fiction, named Best Crime Fiction Novel of the Year, and already an international bestseller with over 150,000 copies sold.

There's no rest for Paris's top criminal investigation division, La Crim'. Who is preying on women in the French capital? How can he kill again and again without leaving any clues? A serial killer is taking pleasure in a macabre ritual that leaves the police on tenterhooks. Chief of Police Nico Sirsky—a super cop with a modern-day real life, including an ex-wife, a teenage son and a budding love story—races against the clock to solve the murders as they get closer and closer to his inner circle. Will he resist the pressure? The story grabs you by the throat and doesn’t let go until the last page, leading you behind the scenes with the French police and into the coroner’s office. It has the suspense of Seven, with CSI-like details. You will never experience Paris the same way again!

"A taut and terror-filled thriller with a lightning-quick, sinister plot." – Robert Dugoni, New York Times bestselling author

"Ratcheting tension won't let you put the book down." – Cara Black, bestselling author of Paris mysteries

Amazon UK has eight of Agatha Christie's Poirot mystery books for sale at £0.99 each. Highly recommended, especially at such a good price. (I have them already, or my Decemeber total would now be eight books higher!)

Even though I already had them, I've re-bought them, because they're much better formatted than the old FW editions with the black covers that I originally bought many years ago. The FW versions have lots of run-together words, and words with accents often have the accent printed separately, rather than over the word it should be associated with. Since I know these are definite "re-reads" for me, they're worth spending another 99p each on.
