Spaniard here looking for an e-book reader - Need some help

Hi everybody,

Iīm writing from Spain so I hope you excuse any mistakes I might make on writing.
Iīm thinking about buying an e-book but Iīm a little bit lost with all the models and different functions, so I hope maybe you can help me, guys.

What Iīm looking for itīs an e-book that allows me to read my own .doc and .rtf documents mainly. You see, Iīm a writer and I keep sharing my work with other writers as well as reading theirs, but itīs really tiring to do so in front of my computer so thatīs why I was thinking of switching to an e-book instead. I will buy an e-book from time to time (even though I prefer the paper ones) but as I said I will be using the e-book reader to read my own documents mainly, and I really donīt know which e-readers allow that and which one would be the best.

Ideally it would be a not too expensive one, it should allow spanish language and itīd be great if it was one of the models released in the U.K, as there are none available here in Spain and I donīt feel comfortable buying from the U.S due to warranties, customs and such.

I really hope you can help me. Many thanks beforehand.

The Sony Reader is probably your best bet - it will read RTF directly, and is available from the UK.

I see. Many thanks. Just one more question, though: so, if I understand correctly, itīs as simple as to download the rtf document straight into the sony reader and read it from there. I donīt need to use any program to convert the document or anything, right? Iīm asking because Iīm not very good at it

And thanks for the quick reply. Much appreciated.

That's right; the Sony can read RTF directly. There's no conversion required.

Really? I will check again but I havenīt seen them on my local stores.
Still, Iīve been checking the sony e-reader and I can get it for a little bit over 260 euros over the internet from U.K which seems like a really good deal. The cheapest I can find on the spanish ebay is 299,99 euros. Thanks anyway, and I will check them for sure, though Iīm not really sure they suit my needs.

Papyre is a rebrand/OEM version of the Hanlin V3, which supports RTF and DOC natively. Among several other formats.

Hello and welcome. While the Sony reader will read .rtf natively since you are creating the document you might want to generate a more reader friendly format such as mobi, lit, or lrf. There are many threads here on book file creation that you will find help for. Of course, your colleges would have to do this as well.

Thanks pilotbob. That makes sense I guess. I didnīt know .rtf wasnīt a very friendly format. Iīll take your advice and have a look around. I see there are quite a few things to learn.

Well, it's not unfriendly to a reader that supports it well, as long as it is created without linefeeds breaking up the lines. But for readers that don't support that format it is unfriendly.

I'll recommend going with one of the Hanlin V3 versions (Bebook, Papyre, etc) as not only will you get the best format support, you'll also get local support easily.

While the Sony is nice, You'll have to import it from either the US or UK as its not due for a roll out in mainland europe till next year (no idea when in Spain Actually).

As for RTF, its natively supported in every word processor there is I believe, so you can just save your document in that format with a "Save As".

For Where to buy?

Check the Wiki Link Below In my Signature for the full listing of what's available in Spain.
