I never considered a Kindle since my main source of books was and still is the public library, which didn't offer Kindle books for a long time. Even now, the Kindle selection tends to be less than the epub selection, at least IME. Recently I have been collecting Kindle freebies so I have been thinking about getting a PW or something, now that Kindles are relatively cheap and no longer have the (IMO ugly) keyboard. At the moment I read them on my tablet (Asus). I have Calibre but quite frankly I'm not prepared to go to that much effort for freebies. |

There is no "effort". Add the Kindle book to Calibre (with the appropriate plug-ins installed). Tell Calibre to send the book to your ePub device. It will automatically convert it to ePub format for you.

I bought a kindle touch but returned it. It felt flimsy. I then got a sony 650 that my husband uses. I have iPads. I use calibre to manage my library, including dozens of amazon purchased books. I've just set up Content Server on Calibre so now I can just peruse my library and get what i want. The kindle pw2 looks excellent to me. I I ever purchased one, that would be it. Last edited by harriska2; 12-03-2013 at 10:34 AM. |

I plan on getting a Kindle Fire HDX as my first tablet. However, I don't plan on using it to read books, but to websurf and watch videos while traveling mostly.

Amazon's hardware has always lacked necessary features for me. No expansion options is an automatic dealbreaker, for all kinds of hardware. I might be interested in a Kindle if the rumors of a card slot in the next version are true, but I really doubt that will happen.

I admit to being a huge fanboi of my paperwhite. I wanted so badly to say no to the evil empire. The reality was the paperwhite is perfect for me. Calibre handles any issues using books from other than amazon. My mother taught me don't cut off your nose to spite your face It should be all about what suits you best. applesauce |

Pocketbook, alway, ever My 2 cents: I took a lot of time playing around with other devices. Never found one like PB's: open, excellent features, excellent hardware. I own a PB Touch Lux and formerly a PB 903. I am looking forward to the Cad reader http://www.pocketbook-int.com/de/pro...ook-cad-reader It brings this answer to all the demands I had to such devices:
And the principle is always to give as much freedom to the device owner as possible: Support of all kind of document formats (almost every format), real features (e.g. high quality hardware buttons), open system (linux), innovative updates (e.g. dropbox support for my PB Touch Lux), excellent service. Never owned a Kindle, 'though I use Amazon's Kindle, music, and Audible apps on other devices. Rationale: I require a card slot and prefer open ecosystems to walled prisons -er, gardens. Consequently, when my Significant Other offered me an eReader for Christmas 2011, I requested a NOOK Tablet 16G ("NT"). The NT offered fantastic specs in addition to accommodating a 32G microSD card and, at the time, permitting one to install/update whatever apps s/he wanted. (The following week, a NOOK Tablet OS update made the NT far less attractive by blocking the installation or updating of third-party apps. I briefly considered returning it but ultimately chose instead to create an AFN dual-boot card that allowed me to toggle between the NOOK OS and the Android OS.) I like the highly portable, easily-held-one-handed form factor of a 7" tablet as well as the NOOK OS experience, and the NOOK HD and HD+ now accommodate Google Play apps, so when the NT began acting wonky while in NOOK mode (but not in Android mode), I bought myself a NOOK HD. I would have opted for another device over Kindle had any other device had something that wasn't a walled prison/garden. Alas, I have yet to find an eInk device that is less "locked in" than the Kindle, aside from a rooted Nook. No one ever really mentions the actual details that separate the evil, nefarious DRM encrusted Amazon Kindle ecosystem versus their open and wonderful company or device of choice. I have yet to find any details in my own research. I would vastly prefer an open alternative, but even then I probably won't buy another device until my current Kindle kicks the can. After that, I may look elsewhere. |

If we're discussing a software/hardware ecosystem: A DRM-free migration-friendly store with self-publishing capabilities. (For me to actually use the store, it would also have to contain books I want to buy as well) If we're discussing hardware: A device upon which I can install new software and replace hardware components easily. (This is why my first choice if my Kindle dies is a rooted Nook.) |

I'd say about 70% of the responses here are from people WITH Kindles. Alternative brands are withdrawing from the North American market (Sony, Pocketbook) because they are unable to compete with Amazon. Amazon's dominance is reducing the choice of device in the market and so is ultimately bad for the consumer. This is one of the reasons I have chosen not to own a Kindle.
